Lyricist, filmmaker and stand-up comic Varun Grover didn't hold back during a set from his ongoing comedy tour, 'Nothing Makes Sense', the video of which he uploaded on Wednesday. The show saw him take on a range of topics—from the increasing vulnerability of comedians in India to the state of the government itself. Right at the outset, Grover introduced his set with a sharp-witted disclaimer clearly aimed at the current cultural climate.

“These are jokes. Venue ki isme koi galti nahi hain. Mera bhi nahin hai. Humare time ki hai. If offended, break a clock,” he said. His opening remark was widely interpreted as a reference to the controversy surrounding fellow comedian Kunal Kamra, whose show recently sparked political outrage.

Kunal Kamra's controversy

Kamra had landed in hot water after cracking jokes about Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde during a performance in Mumbai. In response, members of Shiv Sena vandalised the Habitat Comedy Club in Khar, the venue where his show was held. Reacting to the backlash, Kamra had said, “I will not apologise... I don't fear this mob & I will not be hiding under my bed, waiting for this to die down.” He also likened the situation to someone flipping a truck full of tomatoes just because they didn’t like the butter chicken they ate.

Grover on threat to comedians

In the same spirit of satire, Grover used his set to highlight how precarious the profession has become. Referencing comedian Munawar Faruqui’s past arrest, he quipped, “Comedian waise bhi… badi safe life nahi hain comedians ki. Koi bhi kahi bhi uthake apko… Munawar Faruqui ko hi jail jana pada pata hoga apko. Ek joke kiya usne aur jail chala gaya. 3 mahine jail mein raha. Jail se aaya 100 din Kangana Ranaut ke show mein raha, bohot buri halat hain. Bahot mushkil hain iss samay comedian hona.”
