Rashmika Mandanna Reacts After Alia Bhatt's Viral Deepfake Video: 'We’ve Normalised Them But It Isn’t Okay'

At the Hyderabad premiere of 'Animal' Rashmika Mandanna addressed the deepfake issue.

New Delhi: Rashmika Mandanna was one of the first Indian actresses whose deepfake video became viral. She has spoken out against the debate surrounding deepfake, saying people have become used to deepfakes. In Hyderabad on Monday (November 27), the actress was promoting her forthcoming film ‘Animal’ when she referred to deepfakes as "scary." She also expressed her gratitude to all of the people who voiced their support for her after the video clip went viral.

Rashmika Mandanna 's comment comes at a time when Alia Bhatt's deepfake video went viral across various social media platforms. Alia Bhatt has been the most recent celebrity to fall victim to deepfake technology. A video that went viral showed an edited version of Alia dressed in a flowery blue attire. The video showed Alia making lewd gestures to the camera. On the other hand, active internet users quickly determined that the person shown in the video was not the actress, which raised serious issues about the inappropriate use of artificial intelligence and the manipulation of content.

As quoted by Hindustan Times, "Deepfakes have been around for a while and we’ve normalised them, but it isn’t okay. I always wondered who would even care if I chose to speak up and point out that it isn’t okay. So, I’m glad people from across the film industries have supported me,” Rashmika remarked at the ‘Animal’ promotion event in Hyderabad.

When women encounter such situations, Rashmika urges them to speak up and stresses the need to not treat such occurrences as usual. She said, "I understand now how important it is to speak up. I want to urge women to take the help they need when it happens.”

Bollywood stars Kajol, Alia Bhatt, and Katrina Kaif are among the many Indian celebrities whose deepfakes have gone viral online.
