Veteran filmmaker Rakesh Roshan has opened up about the harrowing time in his life when he survived an assassination attempt by members of the Budesh gang in 2000, shortly after the release of Kaho Naa... Pyaar Hai. While he was provided with government-assigned security following the attack, Roshan has now admitted that he often feared for his life—not just from external threats but even from his own guards.
Rakesh Roshan on feeling unsafe around his security team
In a conversation with ANI, Roshan shared his unsettling experience of living under constant security. “No matter how much security personnel is around you, you are still an open target. If someone wants to harm you, security personnel won’t be able to do anything,” he explained.
He revealed that instead of feeling protected, the presence of armed guards made him more anxious. “After this incident, I was assigned two armed security guards. I would sit in the front of the car while they sat in the back, and that would make me more scared. Woh do peeche baithe hain bandook ke saath. Kabhi kuch ho jaye voh peeche se na mujhe maar dein (Those two are sitting behind me with a gun. In case something happens, they can kill me),” he admitted.
Over time, the constant security presence became overwhelming, even in his daily routine. Roshan recalled how he felt trapped while going for his usual walks. “When I would go for a walk on the beach, those two security guards would be with me. I was like, ‘What is happening?’ So, I requested them to take away my security cover. I am okay just as I am. We will see what happens,” he said.
Attack on Rakesh Roshan
On January 21, 2000, Roshan was shot at by two armed assailants outside his office in Santacruz, Mumbai. One bullet struck his left arm, while another grazed his chest. Fortunately, he was rushed to the hospital for emergency surgery and survived the attack. A police investigation later revealed that the attempt on his life was orchestrated by the Budesh gang, reportedly due to extortion-related disputes with the filmmaker.
