New Delhi: Bollywood celebrities, including Actors Akshay Kumar, Urmila Matondkar, Sanjay Dutt, Richa Chadha, Kiara Advani and others expressed shock over the viral video of two tribal women being paraded naked in Manipur.
Tension mounted in violence-hit Manipur after a purported May 4 video surfaced on Wednesday. The Northeastern state has been seeing ethnic violence since May 3, and several fatalities have been reported.
Taking to Twitter, Akshay Kumar said he is "shaken and disgusted" to see the video of violence against women in Manipur.
He wrote, “Shaken, disgusted to see the video of violence against women in Manipur. I hope the culprits get such a harsh punishment that no one ever thinks of doing a horrifying thing like this again.”
Urmila Matondkar also took to Twitter and called out the authorities for not taking any action for the incident that took place in May.
"Shocked, shaken, horrified at #manipur video n fact that it’s happened in May with no action on it. Shame on those sitting on their high horses drunk with power, jokers in media boot licking them, celebrities who r silent. When did we reach here dear Bharatiyas/Indians? (sic)" she tweeted.
Kiara Advani said she is shaken to the core by the violence against women
"The video of violence against women in Manipur is horrifying and has shaken me to the core... Those responsible must face the most SEVERE punishment they deserve," she wrote on Twitter.
Sanjay Dutt tweeted, "My utmost hope is for the culprits to be punished with the utmost severity, sending a clear message that such despicable actions will not be tolerated in any circumstance.”
Actor Renuka Shahane tweeted, “Is there no one to stop the atrocities in Manipur? If you are not shaken to the core by that disturbing video of two women, is it even right to call oneself human, let alone Bharatiya or Indian!”
She also wrote in reply to a tweet, “Wherever in our country and whichever Indian citizen it happens with, it is a shame for all of us collectively! When I saw the vile video, I only saw a mob of disgusting INDIAN MEN parading two helpless INDIAN WOMEN naked, molesting them outrageously, and filming their despicable act triumphantly! Please rise above this left, right, center, language, religion & State narrative! Only the utterly depraved will first look at a woman's ethnicity or religion before thinking about crimes like this being wrong.”
Actor Ashutosh Rana too took to Twitter and expressed his anguish over the incident.
Actor Richa Chadha termed the incident "shameful, horrific, and lawless".
"Stop asking why he’s quiet. Surely, you don’t expect the very people who caused the strife to speak/act against it. #Manipur," composer Vishal Dadlani wrote on the microblogging site.
Actor Riteish Deshmukh wrote, “Deeply disturbed with the visuals of the atrocities against the women in Manipur… I am seething with anger… no man should go unpunished for such a crime. Attack on the dignity of a woman is an attack on humanity itself.”
Anupam Kher also condemned the violence against the Manipuri women.
Police said a case of abduction, gang rape and murder has been registered at Nongpok Sekmai police station in Thoubal district against unknown armed miscreants.
The main accused, Khuyrum Heradas, 32, was arrested on Thursday from Thoubal district after police identified him from the video.
