'Shut Up, You Cockroach': Javed Akhtar Hits Back At Troll For Accusing Him Of Fat-Shaming Rohit Sharma

Veteran lyricist Javed Akhtar recently slammed a troll who twisted his praise for Virat Kohli into an insult aimed at Indian cricket captain Rohit Sharma.

Veteran lyricist Javed Akhtar recently slammed a troll who twisted his praise for Virat Kohli into an insult aimed at Indian cricket captain Rohit Sharma. The situation unfolded when Akhtar applauded Kohli’s stellar performance in India’s Champions Trophy semi-final match against Australia, only for a social media user to accuse him of making a derogatory remark about Rohit.

Javed Akhtar's praise for Virat Kohli

Following India’s victory, Javed Akhtar expressed his admiration for Virat and the team on X (formerly Twitter). He wrote, “Once again, Virat has proved that he is the strongest pillar of today’s Indian cricket edifice!!! Hats off!!”

However, his post was met with an unexpected response from a user who commented, “If Virat is the strongest pillar, then who is Rohit Sharma? The heaviest pillar? Shame on you, Javed saab, for fat-shaming the Indian captain.”

Lyricist hits back at troll

Irritated by the comment, Javed Akhtar fired back, saying, “Shut up, you cockroach. I have great respect for Rohit Sharma and all the great Indian cricketers in Test history. What kind of a neech (vile) and pathetic liar are you to claim that I have ever spoken against the dignity of a great player like Rohit? Kabhi socho tum itne ghatia aur ganday aadmi kyon ho (Think about why you are such a lowly and disgusting person).”

Rohit Sharma's weight controversy

This controversy comes shortly after Congress leader Shama Mohamed faced backlash for her remarks on Rohit Sharma’s weight. She had posted on social media, “Rohit Sharma is fat for a sportsman! He needs to lose weight! And of course, he is the most unimpressive captain India has ever had! What is so world-class about him compared to his predecessors? He is a mediocre captain as well as a mediocre player who got lucky to be the captain of India.”

Following widespread criticism, she later deleted her tweet.

Javed Akhtar’s previous response to trolls

This isn't the first time Javed Akhtar has taken on online trolls. When he celebrated India’s win over Pakistan in the Champions Trophy, he was subjected to communal remarks. After his tweet, one social media user attempted to stir religious sentiments by commenting, “Javed. Babar ka baap Kohli hai. Bolo, Jai Shree Ram!” Akhtar, refusing to be dragged into communal rhetoric, responded with his signature sharpness, “Main to sirf yeh kahoonga ke tum ek neech insaan ho aur neech hi maroge. Tum kya jaano desh prem kya hota hai.” (I will only say that you are a petty person and will remain so. What do you know about patriotism?) Read the complete story here
