Hema Malini Recalls Accidentally Injuring Parveen Babi On Kranti Sets: ‘Khoon Baha Toh Picture...'

Veteran actress Hema Malini recently opened up about a memorable incident from the sets of the 1981 blockbuster Kranti, where she starred alongside Parveen Babi, Dilip Kumar, Manoj Kumar, and Shashi Kapoor. The moment, etched in her memory, took place on the very first day of filming during an intense sword-fighting scene with Parveen.

When Hema Malini accidentally injured Parveen Babi

Speaking to HT City, Hema shared, “In Kranti, Parveen Babi was there. It was the first day of shooting. I had a scene with her in which we were fighting in a sequence with swords. She was a very nice, sweet girl. But, the fight master keeps inspiring because they want a more aggressive act. When she did it, uske haath mein laga (she got hurt). She got a cut on her finger, I felt so bad. Itna darr gayi thi main ki pata nahi kya hogaya (I got so scared).”

Though the sword wasn’t real, the injury left Hema shaken, especially because Parveen was quite delicate by nature. “It was just a sharp edge. She is a very delicate girl. Usko laga toh main pareshaan hogayi, sab mujhe sambhaalne lage (I got so worried that everyone started paying attention to me). That’s why Parveen and me became very good friends,” she added.

Interestingly, the accident sparked a superstition among the crew, which, in hindsight, seemed almost prophetic. “Khoon baha, khoon behgaya toh picture hit hai, aisa bolte the vahan (there was a superstition that if someone bleeds, the film would be a hit). I didn’t do it purposely, it just happened!” Hema recalled with a smile.

Reflecting on her journey, the actress, who has worked in nearly 200 films, added, “These were all small incidents that I remember now. Nearly 200 films I have acted, each film has had such beautiful songs, if you talk to me, there are so many stories to tell.”

For those unfamiliar, Kranti did indeed go on to become a massive success and was the highest-grossing film of the year — and of that decade.
