Coldplay's Magical Farewell: Chris Martin Sings 'Vande Mataram' On Republic Day; WATCH

Chris Martin, the charismatic frontman of Coldplay, delivered an unforgettable farewell performance in India on Republic Day, captivating fans at Ahmedabad's Narendra Modi Stadium. The event was nothing short of magical, with over 1.25 lakh fans lighting up the stadium with their flashlights, creating a sea of sparkling stars. The highly anticipated concert, the band’s last in India as part of their Music of the Spheres World Tour, was streamed live on Disney+ Hotstar, allowing millions to join the experience.

Coldplay's special performance on Republic Day

As the clock struck 8 pm, the stadium buzzed with anticipation, and the atmosphere was electric. Martin, dressed casually in a sea blue T-shirt and jeans, kicked off the night with "High Power," setting the tone for an evening filled with emotion, energy, and nostalgia. Fans sang along in unison to hits like "Adventure of a Lifetime" and "Paradise." Midway, Martin charmed the crowd by addressing them in Hindi, expressing gratitude for their overwhelming love and support.

"Dhanyawaad pyaare dosto. Aap sab ka bohat swagat hai hamare show me. Aap sabka bohat dhanyawaad ki aapne hume yaha perform karne ka mauka diya. Ahmedabad me aake hum bohat khushi ho rahi hai. Aur namaste aap sabko jo hume live stream par dekh rahe hai," he said, earning thunderous cheers.

Switching briefly to Gujarati, Martin added, “That is the every Hindi word I ever learned in my whole life. So thank you.” He further delighted Indian fans by acknowledging the occasion, saying, "Happy Republic Day to everybody in India. We know how lucky we are to play in your beautiful country, especially on a day when all the planets are aligned and we have the best audience in the best stadium in the whole wide world."

 

 

The concert took a patriotic turn when Martin hummed a few lines from A R Rahman's iconic anthem "Maa Tujhe Salaam," sending the crowd into a frenzy. His constant interaction with fans, including reading their signs and taking song requests, kept the energy soaring throughout the night.

Coldplay's Performance

In a setlist packed with hits, Martin delivered stunning renditions of "Yellow," "Charlie Brown," "All My Love," "Clocks," "People of the Pride," "Hymn for the Weekend," and "Viva La Vida." During "Everglow," he invited a young couple onstage to sing along with him, describing them as representatives of every fan in attendance.

A lighthearted moment came when Martin announced he would sing for whoever appeared on the big screen, playfully customising the lyrics of "Yellow" to suit each person shown. The crowd erupted with laughter and applause as the singer engaged with fans on a personal level.

Jasprit Bumrah attends Coldplay concert

Adding to the night’s surprises was the presence of Indian cricket star Jasprit Bumrah in the audience. Martin honored the fast bowler by improvising lyrics about Bumrah’s achievements: "Well Jasprit, my beautiful brother. The best bowler in the whole of cricket. We do not enjoy watching you destroy England with wicket after wicket after wicket."

Clips of Bumrah's bowling feats flashed on the screen, drawing deafening cheers from the crowd. Earlier, fans had spotted Bumrah’s jersey draped over the piano, hinting at his special appearance.

 

As the concert neared its conclusion, Coldplay performed fan favorites like "My Universe," "A Sky Full of Stars," "Fix You," "Good Feelings," and "Feelslikeimfallinginlove." Martin expressed heartfelt gratitude, saying, "Thank you for letting us feel what it's like to be an Indian... We had the best time, and we are going to miss you. I hope we come back soon and hope to see you again."

The grand finale was marked by a dazzling display of fireworks, and the stadium lit up with the message "Believe in Love" on the giant screen, leaving fans with an emotional and magical memory of Coldplay's final India concert.

The band, comprising Chris Martin, guitarist Jonny Buckland, bassist Guy Berryman, drummer Will Champion, and manager Phil Harvey, previously performed in India at the 2016 Global Citizen Festival in Mumbai. This Republic Day performance at Ahmedabad, following three sold-out shows in Mumbai, was a fitting farewell for Coldplay’s Indian fans, a night that will forever remain etched in their hearts.
