Aamir Khan Comforts Daughter Ira Over Concerns About Not Earning: 'Your Parents Are Well-Off, Why Are You Worried?'

Actor Aamir Khan recently opened up about a deeply personal conversation with his daughter Ira Khan, who admitted feeling inadequate for not being financially independent in her late twenties. The father-daughter duo appeared together in an interview with Pinkvilla, where they discussed Ira’s mental health foundation, Agatsu, and the emotional pressures of not earning despite being an adult.

Ira Khan on not earning

Ira shared how she often feels guilty for not contributing financially, despite her parents having supported her generously over the years. “Main 26-27 saal ki hoon, mere maa baap ne mere upar bahut paise kharch kiye hain, aur main duniya mein bekar insaan hoon, main kuch nahi kar rahi hoon (My parents have spent a lot of money on me. I am 26–27 years old, and I feel like a useless person in this world. I am not doing anything),” she confessed, admitting that the lack of a traditional career made her feel aimless.

Her father, however, was quick to reassure her. Aamir reminded Ira that financial gain is not the only metric of value. “Aap paise kama rahe ho ya nahi, wo mere liye important nahi hai. Aap kaam accha kar rahe ho, ye mere liye important hai (You are helping so many people, and that means a lot to me. Whether you are earning money or not is not important; the good work you are doing is),” he said, praising the work she is doing through her foundation and reminding her that helping others holds its own worth.

Aamir Khan calls money an abstract concept

Aamir further elaborated on his view of money, calling it an abstract concept that doesn’t define a person’s capabilities. “Money is actually a promissory note that everyone decides to agree to — or else it’s just a piece of paper. It’s an imagined concept,” he said. He emphasized that there are countless gifted individuals who don’t necessarily thrive in a system built on profit, yet their worth remains unquestionable. “Does that make them useless? They can’t earn because they don’t fit inside this system we’ve created. I’ve met so many brilliant people,” he added.

When Aamir Khan told Ira to focus on purpose

Reflecting on a conversation they had a year earlier, Ira recalled how her father had urged her to focus on purpose rather than profit. “Some people help others, but charge money for it. But as long as they’re helping people, money is a separate issue,” Aamir had told her at the time. He reiterated during the interview, “It’s not important to me if you’re earning or not. Fortunately, your parents are well-off. Instead of putting all your energy into earning money, you can put it into helping people… If you’re not taking money for helping people, it’s your choice, and it’s a great thing.”

Ira, who has been vocal about her personal journey with mental health, admitted that her organisation is currently struggling financially. But Aamir expressed complete support, saying he never holds it against anyone if they can’t fund a cause — even reflecting on his own non-profit experience with the Paani Foundation.

Through the course of the conversation, Aamir’s message to Ira remained clear: her value lies not in how much she earns, but in the difference she makes. “I’m here to support you, why are you worried?” he reassured her.
