'Can People Please Calm Down': Malavika Mohanan Says She Wasn't Referring To Nayanthara In Her Remarks

The actress has been criticised for repeatedly making Nayanthara the subject of her jokes.

New Delhi: The trailer for Malavika Mohanan's upcoming film ‘Christy’ has been well received. The actress is currently immersed in marketing her upcoming film. During one of her promotional appearances, she voiced her opinion that the term "superstar" should be removed because of its gendered connotations. Apparently, her comment offended many of Nayanthara's fans.

Malavika Mohanan recently gave an interview to a Malayalam YouTube channel, where she was asked who she would name as the next Lady Superstar. To which she answered,  “I don’t like the term superstar. Actors can be called 'superstar' but I don’t understand what is lady superstar. You don’t ‘lady’ tag. Superstar is enough.”

People who support Nayanthara rushed to social media after Malavika's statement to vent their anger. The actress has been criticised for repeatedly making Nayanthara the subject of her jokes. In light of the uproar, Malavika explained that she was not referring to Nayanthara and that she really admires and respects her.

On Sunday, Malavika felt the need to elaborate on her use of the term "lady superstar." She tweeted: "My comment was about a term that is used to describe female actors & not about any specific actor. I really respect & admire Nayanthara, and as a senior really look up to her incredible journey. Can people please calm down. Especially the tabloid journos."

Earlier, Malavika Mohanan poked fun at Nayanthara's hospital scene in one of the interviews by asking, "How can a person be dying with your lipstick in place even if it's a commercial movie.” According to her, people have to be a little realistic. Nayanthara's devoted admirers lashed out viciously against Malavika at the time.
