The results of Uttar Pradesh Nikay Chunav will be announced today two days after the second and final phase of elections was concluded on Thursday (May 11). In the first phase of the local body elections, conducted in 37 districts on May 4, the voting percentage was 52 per cent while the voter turnout after the final phase on Thursday was recorded at 53 per cent.
According to the State Election Commission (SEC), Varanasi recorded a polling percentage of 38.89, Lucknow 35.42 and Prayagraj 30.32. A polling percentage of 52.59 was recorded in the first phase of the 2017 urban local body elections.
The UP municipal elections were held for 17 seats of Mayor, 1,420 of Corporator, 199 of Nagar Palika Parishad Chairperson, 5,327 of Nagar Palika Parishad Member, 544 of Nagar Panchayat Chairperson, and 7,178 seats of Nagar Panchayat Member. Shahjahanpur will get its mayor for the first time this year as the city became a municipal corporation in 2018.
The poll results will also decide the fate of 198 chairpersons of municipal councils,5,260 municipal council members (nagar palika parishads), 542 chairpersons of town panchayats and 7,177 members of town panchayats. UP BJP spokesperson Hero Bajpai said the party will win all 17 mayor seats.
UP CM Yogi Adityanath had termed the polls as "Dev-Asur Sangram (battle between deities and demons)." On the last day of campaigning, without naming anyone, the chief minister appeared to invoke nature as a great leveller - a force that delivers justice. "It will bag a lion's share in the corporators' category. The party will also perform extremely well in nagar palika parishads and nagar panchayats," PTI quoted Bajpai as saying.
SP spokesperson Deepak Ranjan said the ULB polls "will spring up a surprise". "The cycle (SP's election symbol) has covered a significant distance during the election, while the lotus (BJP's symbol did not bloom," Ranjan said.
On the ground, BJP and Samajwadi Party campaigned aggressively while there was little presence of Congress, with most of its top leaders busy in Karnataka polls.
