'There Won't Be Hung Assembly': Assam CM Himanta Claims NDA Will Form Govt In All Three NE States
Asserting that there will be no hung assemblies in Tripura, Nagaland, or Meghalaya, as some exit polls projected, Assam CM stated that the BJP will form the government with an overwhelming majority.
Himanta Biswa Sarma, the chief minister of Assam, stated on Tuesday that the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) will form the government with an absolute majority in all poll-bound northeastern states of Tripura, Nagaland, and Meghalaya.
Sarma, the convenor of the National Democratic Alliance, stated that no NDA (National Democratic Alliance) partner will form an alliance with either Congress or the Trinamool Congress.
"There will be no hung assembly. In all three states, the NDA will form the government," he was quoted as saying by the news agency Press Trust of India (PTI).
When asked about candidates for chief minister in the three states, he stated that Tripura and Nagaland will remain unchanged.
"Tripura will have a BJP chief minister, while Nagaland will have a coalition government," the convenor of the North East Democratic Alliance (NEDA) said, according to PTI.
The CM of Meghalaya will be chosen based on the number of states won by the BJP.
Tripura had elections on February 16, while Nagaland and Meghalaya held elections on February 27. The results will be announced on March 2.
A difficult political struggle is on the horizon, with many parties vying for seats in the important first round of assembly elections in 2023. In these states, political parties ran aggressive campaigns to lure voters with promises and assaults on their opponents.
Polling took place on 59 of the 60 seats in both states. In Nagaland, BJP candidate Kazheto Kinimi from Akuluto won unopposed, while the poll to Sohiong in Meghalaya was postponed due to the death of former minister and UDP candidate HDR Lyngdoh.
In Meghalaya, a multi-cornered battle was witnessed, with the BJP, Congress, CM Conrad Sangma's NPP (National People's Party), and TMC all giving each other a run for their money. After a schism with longtime ally NPP over corruption charges, the BJP is fighting all Meghalaya seats alone this time.
Although the BJP and Nationalist Democratic Progressive Party (NDPP) seek to retain power in Nagaland, the opposition seeks to dethrone the state's incumbent government. The BJP and NDPP have a 20:40 seat-sharing arrangement, while the Naga People's Front (NPF) and Congress have 22 and 23 seats, respectively.
