On Saturday, Union Home Minister Amit Shah joined a roadshow to support Smriti Irani, the BJP's Lok Sabha candidate from Amethi in Uttar Pradesh. The event marked the last day of campaigning for the fifth phase of polling in the ongoing election.
Shah and Irani greeted people from an open-top vehicle adorned with saffron flags, banners, and flowers, with slogans supporting the PM Modi, and BJP. As the roadshow progressed from Ramlila Maidan to Devipatan Temple, the crowd chanted "Jai Shri Ram".
The Amethi Lok Sabha constituency, one of the 80 parliamentary constituencies in Uttar Pradesh, will vote in phase five on May 20. Classified as a General category seat, it includes five Legislative Assembly segments: Tiloi, Salon (SC), Jagdishpur (SC), Gauriganj, and Amethi, all within CSJM Nagar districts.
The election in Amethi is highly competitive, with the Congress fielding Kishori Lal Sharma, a trusted aide of the Gandhi family, against the BJP's Smriti Irani. Despite Rahul Gandhi not being in the race, reports suggest that the Congress is mounting a challenge to Irani. Supported by the Samajwadi Party (SP), which is actively campaigning for the Congress, Sharma's chances have improved, indicating a tough battle ahead.
Sharma, a long-time confidant of the Gandhi family, has been instrumental in managing affairs in both Raebareli and Amethi. He has actively been campaigning through public meetings and outreach to villagers, presenting himself as an extension of the Gandhi family.
