How Will Shakur Basti Treat 3-Time MLA Satyendar Jain In 1st Poll After Jail? Early Vote Count Trends In

BJP fielded Karnail Singh, while the Congress pitted Satish Kumar Luthra against the two. Among the three Satyendar Jain is the most qualified and has the least declared assets to his name.

Shakur Basti Assembly Election Result: The Shakur Basti constituency, located in northern Delhi was one of the key battlegrounds in the 2025 Delhi Assembly elections. Part of the Chandni Chowk Lok Sabha constituency, it features a mix of residential and commercial areas and is home to the Shakur Basti railway station. The sitting MLA here is Satyendar Jain who won the last three polls. However, Jain on February 5 fought his first polls after being released from jail.

The postal ballots counting started in Delhi at 8 AM. AAP's Satyendra Jain was leading in the Shakur Basti seat as of 8:25 AM. The EVM vote counting will begin shortly.

Sensing an anti-incumbency momentum, the BJP and the Congress fielded strong candidates on the seat. The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) fielded Karnail Singh, while the Congress pitted Satish Kumar Luthra against the two. Among the three Satyendar Jain is the most qualified and has the least declared assets to his name.

However, where Jain loses out is the criminal cases against him. Jain was arrested by the Enforcement Directorate in May 2022 in a 2017 money laundering case. He was eventually released in October last year after the Enforcement Directorate failed to frame charges against him. He spent over two years in jail without bail (except for a 10-month medical bail) or trial.

Karnail Singh is the chief of BJP's temple cell in Delhi. He is known for his anti-Muslim remarks in Delhi.

In the 2020 Delhi Assembly elections, Satyendar Jain won the Shakur Basti seat for AAP with 51,165 votes, defeating BJP’s SC Vats (43,573 votes) and Congress’ Dev Raj Arora (3,382 votes). Jain also secured the seat in 2015 with 51,530 votes, narrowly beating Vats, who garnered 48,397 votes, while Congress' Chaman Lal Sharma received 4,812 votes.

On February 5, 63.23% of the eligible voting population came out to vote in Shakur Basti.

The BJP has been repeatedly targeting AAP over Satyendar Jain's incarceration but mellowed its attack after his release. It now remains to be seen how the public perceives his arrest and release after two years.
