'Refugees From PoK...Sorry, Kashmiri Pandits': Rahul Gandhi's Fumble Draws BJP's Ire

Rahul Gandhi mistakenly referred to Kashmiri Pandits as refugees from Pakistan-occupied Kashmir. He corrected himself, but BJP's Amit Malviya criticized the error.

Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi on Wednesday landed in trouble after he mistakenly called Kashmiri Pandits as refugees from Pakistan-occupied Kashmir (PoK). He was addressing a rally in Jammu where he said that the promises made to refugees from PoK by former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh will be fulfilled.

Recognising his mistake, Gandhi swiftly corrected himself. "Sorry, the promises made to Kashmiri Pandits by (former PM) Manmohan Singh will be fulfilled," he said.

"And the promises made to the refugees from PoK in 2014 regarding financial package will be fulfilled by us," he added.

The Bharatiya Janata Party was, however, quick to spot the mistake as BJP IT cell chief Amit Malviya took a jibe at the Congress leader. Malviya said that the Indian Overseas Congress chairman Sam Pitroda wanted people to believe that Congress is not "pappu" anymore and that the mess in Kashmir is a "legacy of Jawaharlal Nehru."

"Then Sam Pitroda wants us to believe that he isn’t Pappu anymore… a man who is the Leader of Opposition can’t distinguish between refugees from PoK and Kashmiri Pandits," Malviya said in a post on X.

"The mess in Kashmir is a legacy of Jawaharlal Nehru. As if that wasn’t enough, we now have Rahul Gandhi also," he added.
