This sets the stage for a high-profile election in Chhattisgarh's Rajnandgaon, where Dr Raman Singh is seeking re-election as Chief Minister.
The counting of votes for the Chhattisgarh Assembly polls is taking place on December 3, Sunday. The voting in the state took place in two phases. The phase 1 voting was held on November 7, and the phase 2 voting took place on November 17.
Chhattisgarh has 90 assembly seats, out of which, in the first phase, voting was held on 20 seats in 12 districts under the Bastar division, the most Naxal-infested region in the state. The voter turnout in the first phase stood at 71.48 percent, while the second phase witnessed a turnout of 68.15 percent.
Rajnandgaon is special to Dr Raman Singh because it is his stronghold, where he has been elected for three consecutive terms. He won the 2018 Chhattisgarh elections with 80,589 votes and a vote percentage of 51.7%. His previous victories include 86,797 votes and a 58.4% vote percentage in 2013, and 77,230 votes and a 59.4% vote percentage in the 2008 Assembly elections. During his tenure as Chief Minister in this constituency, notable developments included the construction of a medical college hospital, an international Astroturf hockey stadium, a flypast and the Mongra Barrage.
The contest in Chhattisgarh is directly between Chief Minister Bhupesh Baghel-led Congress party which is looking to retain its power in the state and the Bharatiya Janata Party which left no stone unturned in its attempt to unseat the Congress. Both the phases of polling in the state were marred with violence. The Congress swept the 2018 polls with 68 seats, leaving the BJP at 15.
