I Was Against English Education, But Now I Understand...: Rajasthan CM Ashok Gehlot

Congress started a yatra in Rajasthan on Tuesday to raise awareness of its seven promises made to the people ahead of the November 25 assembly elections.

Rajasthan Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot on Tuesday highlighted the social security of the people, while laying down the importance of learning English, news agency ANI reported. Speaking at the gathering, CM Gehlot stated: "It's your money and it's being spent on you. We have given social security with this thought and people welcome it...We have given a guarantee for teaching English. I was also against English during my childhood...That was a different era... In the South people were against Hindi and in the North, people were against English. I also understand now it's an international language. It dominates the internet. If students will learn it, they will have a bright future."

Earlier in the day, CM Gehlot disputed the notion of anti-incumbency in his administration and voiced confidence in the capacity of the Congress to retain power in the upcoming elections. Addressing the reporters, he stated: "We have worked for 5 years. There is no anti-incumbency wave. Our guarantees are fabulous. We have given a health insurance cover of Rs 25 lakh to the citizens. No other state is giving this... The manifesto will be released soon...We are giving pension of Rs 1,000 to one crore people."

The "Guarantee Yatra" began with prayers at the Moti Dungari Ganesh temple here by Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot and the party's state in-charge Sukhjinder Singh Randhawa.

A huge number of party leaders and workers joined the march on foot, while Gehlot and Randhawa rode on a bus as part of the procession.

Chief Minister Gehlot has announced the Congress' seven 'guarantees' if it retains power in the state: an annual honorarium of Rs 10,000 to women heads of families, cooking gas cylinders at Rs 500 to 1.05 crore families, purchase of dung from cattle rearers at Rs 2 per kg, law for old pension scheme for government employees, laptop or tablet to students enrolling in government colleges and insurance cover of up to Rs 15 lakh per family to compensate losses due to natural disasters.

Elections to the 200-member Rajasthan Assembly will take place on November 25, with results expected on December 3.
