Congress Maintains Suspense On Punjab CM Face, Rahul Gandhi Puts Ball In Workers' Court

Gandhi said the Congress workers will take a final call on the CM face in Punjab.

New Delhi: Congress leader Rahul Gandhi on Thursday said Punjab Chief Minister Charanjit Singh Channi and state party chief Navjot Singh Sidhu have assured him that both will support whosoever is the CM face.

Gandhi said the Congress workers will take a final call on the CM face in Punjab.

“Punjab CM Charanjit Singh Channi and state Congress chief Navjot Singh Sidhu assured me that whoever will lead (CM face) Punjab, the other person will support him. The party workers will decide,” he said while addressing a gathering in Punjab, ANI reported.

Meanwhile, the Punjab Chief Minister categorically stated that there is no fight between him and Sidhu for the top post.

“Announce the chief minister face for Punjab polls, we (Punjab Congress) will stand united,” Channi said during a gathering where Gandhi was also present.

The remarks come as the Punjab Congress president earlier raised the issue of CM candidate before Gandhi.

Sidhu said that the voters must not be kept on tenterhooks and the Congress must declare the CM candidate.

The cricketer-turned politician, however, added that all will back the person chosen for the coveted post.

Earlier on Tuesday, the Congress released its second list of 23 candidates for the Punjab Assembly elections.

The grand old party, which is looking to retain power in Punjab, has so far announced candidates for 109 out of 117 seats.

Voting for the Punjab Assembly will be held in a single phase on February 14. The results will be declared on March 10.
