'I Gave Rs 1.11 Lakh For Ram Mandir': Congress's Digvijaya Says Using Religion In Elections Is Prohibited

Congress leader Digvijaya Singh has said that religion should be used in elections, adding that he himself gave Rs 1.11 lakh for Ram Mandir's construction.

Congress leader Digvijaya Singh on Sunday said that he is a true follower of Sanatan Dharma and a "good" Hindu but asserted that religion should not be used in elections. Speaking on the ongoing row over BJP's elections poster featuring Ram Mandir, Singh said that he gave Rs 1.11 lakh for the temple while Madhya Pradesh CM Shivraj Singh Chouhan gave Rs 1 lakh.

"I follow Sanatana Dharma, and I am a good Hindu... However, the use of religion in elections is prohibited. In the construction of Ram Mandir, Shivraj Singh Chouhan gave Rs 1 lakh, while I gave Rs 1.11 lakh. I sent that cheque to PM Modi to submit to the trust. He sent it back and asked me to submit it myself. I submitted it," the former MP CM said.

This comes after Congress on Saturday filed a complaint to the Election Commission (EC) against the BJP for using the image of Ram Mandir in its poll campaign poster in Madhya Pradesh.

The poster read: Bhavya Ram Mandir bankar ho raha taiyar, fir is bar bhajpa sarkar (Grand Ram Mandir is getting ready, this time again it is BJP government)

Reacting to Congress's objection, the BJP alleged that the grand old party was willing to remove Ram temple hoarding in MP. Madhya Pradesh BJP President VD Sharma said that Congress's true nature has been "exposed".

"Congress' basic character is against Lord Shri Ram, against Sanatana Dharma. Madhya Pradesh's 9.5 crore people are asking why does Congress object to the hoardings of Ram Mandir?"  he added.
