Meghalaya is going to the polls on Monday. The contest is primarily between the National People's Party, led by Conrad Sangma, and the Congress, with the United Democratic Party, BJP, and Trinamool also vying for votes.

The 60 Assembly seats are being contested by 375 candidates. While 233 are from national parties, the remaining 69 are from state parties. There are also 44 Independent competitors.

The total number of candidates with criminal records has decreased slightly. Twenty-one of the 375 candidates has filed criminal charges against themselves, compared to 25 in the previous elections.

There has also been a slight increase in the number of female candidates running for office, from 33 in 2018 to 36 in 2023, according to a report by news agency PTI.

At least 47 per cent (177) of the candidates are graduates, with 58 holding a postgraduate or doctorate degree. At least 34 candidates have finished secondary school, with one declaring himself illiterate, as per the report.

Metbah Lyngdoh, the senior UDP leader, is the wealthiest contender in this election, with assets worth over 146 crore. Vincent Pala, a senior Congress leader, is second on the list, with assets worth Rs 125 crore.

Arbiangkam Kharsohmat, the Congress candidate in Meghalaya, has the fewest stated assets of any contender –  Rs 9,000.

About 8 per cent (29) of all candidates are between the ages of 25 and 30.

There are 61 MLAs running for re-election in 2023 (including those who won by-elections later). Between 2018 and 2023, the assets of re-contesting MLAs increased by an average of 77 per cent.

In 2023, the average assets of these 61 re-contesting MLAs will be 12.31 crore, up from 6.97 crore in 2018.

Metbah Lyngdoh, the richest contender in this race, increased his total assets by 59.04 crores between 2018 and 2023, the highest rupee increase among candidates.
