Voters across India are casting their ballots today in the fifth phase of the Lok Sabha elections 2024, with polling stations open in 49 Parliamentary Constituencies (PCs) spread over eight States and Union Territories (UTs). This phase also sees simultaneous elections for 35 Assembly seats in Odisha.
In Phase 5 of the ongoing Lok Sabha Elections, notable cities such as Mumbai, Thane, Lucknow and Kolkata are included. Voting, scheduled from 7 AM to 6 PM (timing may vary by constituency), has over 9.45 lakh polling officials on duty. A total of over 8.94 crore voters, comprising 4.69 crore males, 4.26 crore females, and 5409 third-gender electors, are eligible to exercise their franchise.
Several key battles are taking place in this phase across various states in the fifth phase of General elections. In Uttar Pradesh Defence Minister Rajnath Singh, Women and Child Development Minister Smriti Irani, and Congress leader Rahul Gandhi are among those vying for victory. Uttar Pradesh also witnesses the Assembly bypoll for the Lucknow East constituency.
Maharashtra is witnessing a significant phase with polling in 13 Lok Sabha constituencies, including six in Mumbai. Union Minister Piyush Goya, Baharti Pawar, and Kapil Patil are among the key candidates contesting. Click here to read more.
West Bengal sees a bevy of high-profile contests, with actors, ministers, and seasoned politicians testing their luck across seven constituencies in the southern part of the state. Barrackpore, Howrah, and Arambagh are among the key battlegrounds.
Bihar is witnessing voting on five seats, with a focal point in Hajipur, where Chirag Paswan aims to retain his late father's seat against RJD's Shiv Chandra Ram.
The Election Commission of India (ECI) has ensured that polling stations are well-equipped with essential facilities such as shade, drinking water, ramps, toilets, and other basic amenities to guarantee voters' comfort and safety, especially in the face of hot weather conditions prevalent in many areas.
The Election Commission has deployed extensive security measures across the polling stations to ensure smooth voting. In Maharashtra's Mumbai alone, nearly 30,000 security personnel, including units of the Central Armed Police Forces (CAPF), are deployed.
With voting to take place across the country, the fate of 144 candidates in Lok Sabha and several others in Assembly elections hangs in balance. Votes will be counted on June 4.

Lok Sabha Phase 5 LIVE Updates: BJP Files Complaint With EC Against Uddhav Thackeray's Press Conference
The Bharatiya Janata Party on Monday wrote to the Election Commission of India alleging that Shiv Sena (UBT) chief Uddhav Thackeray violated the model code of conduct by holding a press conference here even as voting for the fifth phase of the Lok Sabha elections was underway in Mumbai and elsewhere in Maharashtra.
Thackeray spoke to reporters about 5 pm, alleging that the polling process was facing delays at several places in Mumbai and the Election Commission was doing this deliberately at the behest of the Narendra Modi government. Voting was slow especially in the areas where the opposition was strong, he claimed.
Mumbai BJP chief Ashish Shelar stated in his letter to the ECI that Thackeray's press conference was in violation of the model code of conduct as voting was taking place all over Mumbai when he spoke.
Thackeray made baseless allegations against Modi and tried to mislead the electorate into believing that the government or the ruling party was influencing the ECI, Shelar said.
"Such statements are blatantly false, mischievous and defamatory in nature," he added. (PTI Input)
