'Victory And Defeat Aren't New To BJP': BS Yediyurappa After Karnataka Election Results

Karnataka Election Results 2023: After Congress claimed a remarkable win in the 2023 Karnataka Assembly elections, BJP leader BS Yediyurappa on Saturday insisted that "victory and defeat aren't new to BJP." The senior BJP leader - former Karnataka chief minister stated that the party will introspect on its defeat, news agency ANI reported. 

Speaking with reporters, BS Yediyurappa stated: "Party workers need not be panicked by these results. We will introspect about the party's setback. I respectfully accept this verdict."

According to the Election Commission, Congress is leading in 133 seats, followed by BJP in 65 seats, JD(S) in 22, and others in 4.

The process for votes counting started at 8 am over 36 centres all through the state. The voting on May 10 seen a "record" turnout of 73.19 per cent, as citizens cast their votes to choose agents for the 224-member Gathering.

BJP had emerged as the single largest party in the House in the 2018 election, winning 104 seats. In the 2018 polls, the Congress party won 80 seats.

A collective sum of 2,615 candidates were competing in the electoral race. Karnataka is divided into six regions that encompass 224 constituencies, including Bengaluru, Central, Coastal, Hyderabad-Karnataka, Mumbai-Karnataka, and Southern Karnataka or Old Mysore region. The two most extensive areas in the state are Mumbai-Karnataka and Southern Karnataka, encompassing 50 and 51 constituencies, respectively.

In the 2018 elections, HD Kumaraswamy, the son of Deve Gowda, assumed the role of Chief Minister as JD(S) formed a post-election coalition with Congress. No single political party attained an absolute majority in the aforementioned electoral process. Nonetheless, the tenure of the government proved to be extremely short-lived as the BJP strategically lured MLAs from the opposing parties, which eventually resulted in the downfall of the JD(S)-Congress coalition government in July of 2019. The 2018 election saw the BJP emerge as the biggest party in the House, securing 104 seats.
