Opposition in Goa, Bihar, Manipur and Meghalaya to stake claim to form govt

Seeking an adoption of Karnataka example, Congress party in Goa and RJD in Bihar have decided to stake claim to form government in the respective states on the argument of being the single largest party in elections. Manipur and Meghalaya too follow the suit.

New Delhi: Seeking an adoption of Karnataka example, Congress party in Goa and RJD in Bihar have decided to stake claim to form government in the respective states on the argument of being the single largest party in elections. On the same grounds, Manipur and Meghalaya will also follow the suit. Congress spokesperson Rachit Seth tweeted: "If the criteria is that the Single Largest Party should be called to form the Government, then Congress should be allowed to form the Government in Goa, Manipur and Meghalaya and RJD (plus Congress) should form Government in Bihar." He further tweeted that: "In Goa,Congress to stake claim on the floor of the House In Manipur,Okram Ibobi Singh to stake claim on the floor of the House In Meghalaya,Mukul Sangma to stake claim In Bihar- Tejashvi Yadav to stake claim".   Goa Congress party has sought time from the Governor asking for a chance of forming government in Goa as they were the single largest party during Goa elections in 2017. The Party members have decided to stake claim tomorrow by submitting to Governor Mridula Sinha a formal letter containing signatures of all the 16 party MLAs ‘In 2017, we won 17 seats & were single largest party & continue to be but Governor chose to invite the BJP which had 13 seats. In Karnataka, Governor invited BJP as they are the single largest party. So, we appeal to Governor to invite us to form govt’, said Yatish Naik of Goa Congress in a press conference. The party leaders in Goa wrote a letter to the Governor seeking her time to submit a memorandum. The letter signed by Chandrakant (Babu) Kavlekar the Leader of Congress (I) Legislature Party is addressed to Mridula Sinha, the Governor of Goa. The letter reads: “Your Excellency, Kindly grant an appointment to meet with you as early as possible but not later than 10.00 am tomorrow i.e.  18.05.2018 regarding the present state of affairs in Goa and submit  to you a memorandum.” In the Assembly elections held in March last year, the Congress had bagged 17 seats in the 40-member House, falling short of the majority figure by four seats. The BJP, which got 14 seats, formed the government in alliance with Goa Forward Party and MGP, both of which had secured three seats each. Three Independents also went with the BJP. Following the trend, RJD in Bihar also asked the Governor to give it a chance to form the government as it is the single largest party of Bihar. RJD leader Tejashwi Yadav wrote on Twitter: “In Patna RJD will organise a daylong protest against the murder of democracy in Karnataka. We ask the Governor to dissolve the current Bihar govt. and give RJD which is the largest party in the state a chance to form government” He further tweeted: “We are not only single largest party but single largest block of pre poll alliance in Bihar. Then why should we not be called to form government in Bihar? Tomorrow at 1 PM will meet Bihar Governor.”
