Who Is Parvesh Verma? Ex-Delhi CM's Son And BJP’s ‘Giant Killer’ Who Defeated Arvind Kejriwal In Delhi

Delhi Election Results 2025: BJP leader Parvesh Verma defeated AAP chief and former CM Arvind Kejriwal in the New Delhi seat, marking the saffron party's resurgence after 12 years of AAP dominance.

Delhi Election Results 2025: BJP leader Parvesh Verma has emerged as the ‘giant killer’ of the 2025 Delhi Assembly elections, defeating Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) supremo and outgoing Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal in the high-profile New Delhi constituency by a margin of 4,089 votes.

Verma’s victory marks a major shift in Delhi’s political landscape, signalling the BJP’s resurgence after 12 years of AAP dominance. With the BJP securing 48 of the 70 seats, the party is set to return to power in the national capital after 27 years.

Following his victory, Verma said, “This is not just my win, it is the triumph of the people of Delhi who chose truth over lies, governance over gimmicks and development over deception. I humbly thank every voter who placed their trust in me.”

Kejriwal, in a video message, conceded defeat, stating, “We accept the people’s mandate with humility. I congratulate the BJP on its victory and hope it fulfils the expectations of Delhi’s residents.”

Delhi Election Results 2025: Who Is Parvesh Verma?

Born on 7 November 1977, Parvesh Verma is the son of former Delhi Chief Minister and senior BJP leader Sahib Singh Verma. He completed his schooling at Delhi Public School, RK Puram, and later graduated from Delhi University’s Kirori Mal College. He also holds a Master of Business Administration degree from the Fore School of Management.

His father Sahib Singh Verma was an active RSS member and also served the World Jat Aryan Foundation as its president. Sahib Singh Verma became the Education and Development Minister in the Delhi government in 1993. He became Delhi Chief Minister in 1996 after Madan Lal Khurana was embroiled in a corruption crisis. The stint lasted only for two and a half years amid rivalry from Khurana. He was replaced by Sushma Swaraj during an onion price crisis.

Coming from an influential political family, Verma’s uncle, Azad Singh, was the Mayor of the North Delhi Municipal Corporation and contested the 2013 assembly elections from Mundka on a BJP ticket.

A two-time West Delhi MP and former Mehrauli MLA, Parvesh Verma has been associated with the BJP for nearly three decades. He was associated with the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) before he rose through the BJP's ranks.

Parvesh Verma began his political journey in 2013, when he was elected as an MLA from Mehrauli, defeating Congress leader Yoganand Shastri, who was then the Speaker of the Delhi Assembly. The BJP leader later transitioned to national politics, winning the 2014 Lok Sabha elections from West Delhi and securing a second consecutive victory in 2019.

He is currently a member of the BJP’s national executive and has been active in social work through Rashtriya Swabhiman, an NGO founded by his father.

During his tenure as an MP, he served on the Joint Committee on Salaries and Allowances of Members of Parliament and the Standing Committee on Urban Development.

In the 2014 general election, Parvesh Verma seized the West Delhi Lok Sabha seat by a record margin of 2,68,586 votes. In the 2019 Lok Sabha elections, he defeated Congress’ Mahabal Mishra by a record margin of 5,78,486 votes, the highest ever in Delhi’s electoral history.

Delhi Election Results 2025: Parvesh Verma's Net Worth

The BJP leader declared movable assets worth Rs 77.89 crore and immovable assets valued at Rs 12.19 crore in his poll affidavit. His wife Swati Singh, the daughter of former Union Minister and BJP leader from Madhya Pradesh, owns movable assets worth Rs 17.53 crore and immovable assets worth Rs 6.91 crore.

He listed business and social work as his primary sources of income and showed a cash balance of Rs 2.2 lakh. He stated that he owns three cars -- a Toyota Fortuner worth Rs 9 lakh, a Toyota Innova worth Rs 36 lakh, and an XUV worth Rs 11.77 lakh.

Delhi Election Results 2025: Parvesh Verma's Campaign Against Kejriwal And Key Promises

Even before the BJP officially declared him as a candidate, Verma had positioned himself as the chief challenger to Kejriwal. His campaign focused on promises such as developing a riverfront along the Yamuna similar to Ahmedabad’s Sabarmati, providing housing and infrastructure to slum dwellers, creating 50,000 government jobs, improving road connectivity, and tackling pollution.

His supporters rallied around him with the slogan, “Delhi ka CM kaisa ho, Parvesh Verma jaisa ho” (Delhi’s CM should be like Parvesh Verma), positioning him as a strong contender for the Chief Minister’s post.

Verma is also known for his controversial statements. During the 2020 Delhi Assembly elections, the Election Commission of India imposed a 24-hour campaign ban on him for calling Kejriwal a “terrorist.” Despite this, he has maintained a strong political base and continues to be a prominent Jat leader in Delhi.

Delhi Election Results 2025: Parvesh Verma Among Top Contenders For Delhi CM Post

With Verma’s victory over Kejriwal, his political stature within the BJP has significantly risen. His win not only strengthens his position as one of Delhi’s most influential leaders but also places him among the frontrunners for the Chief Minister’s post.

Along with Verma, BJP’s Tarvinder Singh Marwah also emerged as a giant-slayer, defeating former Deputy Chief Minister Manish Sisodia in the Jangpura constituency.

In the New Delhi seat, Verma secured 30,088 votes, while Kejriwal trailed with 25,999 votes. Congress’ Sandeep Dikshit finished a distant third with 4,568 votes.

As the BJP gears up to form the government in Delhi, the focus now shifts to the party’s central leadership, which will decide who will take over as the next Chief Minister.
