'What Cong Couldn't Do In 60 Years, PM Modi Did In 10 Yrs’: Union Minister Sarbananda Sonowal

Sarbananda Sonowal, the BJP candidate from Dibrugarh, was on a campaign trail to Chabua, Lahowal and Duliajan, where he was accorded a rousing welcome by the party workers and supporters.

Guwahati: Senior Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader and Union Minister of Ports, Shipping & Waterways and Ayush, Sarbananda Sonowal on Thursday launched a scathing attack on the Congress accusing the grand old party of promoting corruption, violence, disharmony and indifference.

Sonowal said that factors like corruption, violence and disharmony have wreaked havoc among the people of Assam for several decades.

Sonowal, who is the BJP candidate from Assam’s Dibrugarh seat for the Lok Sabha elections, was on a campaign trail to Chabua, Lahowal and Duliajan, where he was accorded a rousing welcome by the party workers and supporters.

Addressing the gathering, the former Assam Chief Minister Sonowal said, “Holistic development and self-reliance are the new identities of India under Prime Minister Narendra Modi. With PM Modi’s commitment and focused approach to the resurgence of the northeast, a new horizon of development has opened an avenue of opportunities for the people, especially the youth and the women of the region.”

Sonowal said that the “inefficient” and “corrupt” Congress government had always denied the people of their basic rights.

“Thousands of innocent people lost their lives due to bad governance in Assam in the past, but Assam saw peace return to the state after Narendra Modi became the Prime Minister of the country. There has been no other Prime Minister who has visited the northeastern region more than 60 times in the last 10 years," he said.

"This shows PM Modi’s love and affection for the people of the region. Under his leadership, Assam and the entire northeast has witnessed development on all fronts. PM Modi terms the northeast as the powerhouse of India’s economic growth,” he further said.

Sonowal added that if the BJP-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA) retains power in 2024, India will see development in all aspects.

“We will work in the interest of building a new India. Our only agenda is to strengthen India under the leadership of PM Modi. We will ensure that the quality of life of every citizen of the nation improves. Due to PM Modi’s good governance, India has attained a prominent position at the global stage. What PM Modi did for the country in just 10 years, Congress failed to do in six decades,” Sonowal added.

Sonowal said that the Congress could not even provide the basic needs to the people of the country during their 60 years of “misrule” but PM Modi turned it around in just 10 years.
