Uttar Pradesh To Include Galwan Valley Standoff In University Syllabus

Universities in Uttar Pradesh will soon add the Galwan Valley standoff between Indian and Chinese soldiers in the ‘Defence Studies’ subject.

The syllabus of the Defence Studies subject taught in universities across Uttar Pradesh will now also include the heroics of Indian soldiers in several marked battles, including the Galwan valley standoff with China. As part of the fresh revisions, the Defence Studies syllabus will also include historical wars ranging from as early as the Mahabharata. An expert panel of academicians, military science experts and political personalities is mulling the "need to revisit history and military science" being taught in several central as well as state universities.

As per sources, the revisions in the syllabus is being carved out in a way to amplify the valour of Indian soldiers in wars where the Indian forces emerged triumphant. The revisions in the syllabus are targeted towards spreading awareness about the battles in which the bravery of Indian soldiers played a pivotal role.

“Although the Indo-China war ended in a ceasefire, that too because the Chinese would not have been able to continue the war once the winter sets in, the general perception is that India lost the war even though there have been many instances where Indian forces gave a befitting reply to China,” Prof Prashant Agarwal, head of the Department of Defence and Strategic Studies, Allahabad University, was reported as saying by news agency IANS.

"A handful of Indian soldiers inflicted massive damage to the Chinese side and fought with a comparatively inferior weaponry. There is a need to glorify Indian forces and show the world the real picture of the valour of our soldiers by 'revisiting' several wars and battles fought during the Mughal, British and post-Independence era,” Professor Agarwal was further reported saying.

"How can the students be aware of the bravery of the Indian Army when they see the battles and army's might through the lens of foreign writers? There are not many books written by Indian authors.," he added.
