NSUI Stages Protest In Delhi Over 'Rigging' In NEET UG 2024 Amid Results Row

NEET UG 2024 results, released on June 4, have triggered a controversy over alleged inflated marks. While 67 students have scored the perfect score, 720, some others have scored 718 or 719.

New Delhi: Protests over alleged irregularities in the NEET UG 2024 results have intensified across the country. The National Students Union of India (NSUI), linked to the Congress, has stepped in to support NEET students. NSUI members held a protest in Delhi against what they described as "rigging" in the exam. 

Earlier, the RSS' student wing Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) had sought a CBI probe in the matter.

The exam results, released on June 4, have triggered a controversy over alleged inflated marks. While 67 students have scored the perfect score, 720, some others have scored 718 or 719 — marks some students describe as impossible to secure on account of the nature of the test.

The National Testing Agency (NTA), which conducts the exam, has denied allegations of a potential leak, and explained that compensatory marks were given to students who lost time during the exam at certain centres. Additionally, changes in textbooks, which suggested one question had two correct answers, led to a revision in scores for some students, which added to the number of high-scorers, the NTA said. A four-member panel has also been set up to look into the allegations, even as the NTA said the high scores could also be attributed to the exam being relatively easier this year.

Many students who took the NEET UG 2024 complained to the high courts of Punjab, Haryana, Delhi, and Chhattisgarh that they lost time during the exam on May 5, 2024, at certain centres. To address these concerns, the NTA set up a grievance redressal committee comprising experts, after which grace marks were awarded to certain applicants. According to the NTA, these issues only affected over 1,500 students at six centres.
