NEET-UG Results: Supreme Court Issues Notice To NTA, Refuses To Stay Counselling. Next Hearing On July 8

The Supreme Court on Tuesday issued notice to National Testing Agency in the matter pertaining to discrepancies in the NEET-UG results 2024.

NEET-UG Result 2024: The Supreme Court on Tuesday issued notice to National Testing Agency (NTA) in the matter pertaining to dicrepancies in the NEET-UG results 2024. A bench of Justice Vikram Nath and Ahsanuddin Amanullah issued notice to NTA and remarked that "sanctity has been affected, so we need answers."

The bench has listed the matter for further hearing on July 8 after vacations. The top court also ordered for the tagging other petitions in this matter.

This plea was represented by Advocate Mathews Nedumpara for a "reconsideration of the results of NEET 2024, stay of counselling and other reliefs". This petition was filed on June 1 by Shivangi Mishra and others before the declaration of the results.

The counsel appearing for NTA requested the top court to tag the present petition along with an earlier petition on which notice was issued by Supreme Court on May 17. That petition is listed for further hearing on July 8 by a bench headed by CJI DY Chandrachud.

"It is not that simple that because you have done it is sacrosanct. Sanctity has been affected, so we need answers," Justice Amanullah told the counsel representing the NTA.

On May 17, The top court refused to stay results but issued notice to NTA over allegations of paper leak. This matter was then listed for July 8.

Earlier in the day, the top court refused to entertain mentioning of fresh petitions for urgent hearing in the matter pertaining to dicrepancies and grace marks allotted to certain students in the NEET-UG results 2024. Advocate J Sai Deepak along with three other advocates mentioned a fresh petitions challenging the NEET results today before the vacation bench of Justices Vikram Nath and Ahsanuddin Amanullah. However, the vacation bench asked him to approach the Registry, following which the petition will be routed via CJI DY Chandrachud for listing and clubbing.

When the counsel appearing for the petitioners apprised the court that the NEET counselling might start soon and a connected petition is listed today, the bench repeated that counsels all are wasting their time in mentioning as the bench has no authority to list a petition like this.

Several separate petitions have been filed in the top court over the 'grace marks' granted to more than 1500 students over delay during exam. The top court vacation bench refused to hear these petitions mentioned today along with the listed plea against NEET-UG results in which it has issued notice to NTA today.

What Petitioners In NEET-UG Results Case Seek From Supreme Court

The petitioners have challenged the grace marks granted to certain students over delay during the exam, and have sought to recall the results and conduct of fresh exams for admissions to NEET-UG.

The petitioners have contended that the grant of grace marks was arbitrary and it is statistically impossible to score marks as high as  718 & 719 out of 720 that were secured by several students.

The petitions further question how 67 students from one particular Centre got full 720 marks. It also states that there are several complaints about the provisional answer key being published on April 29 by NTA and the allegations of paper leak.

The petitioners demand a stay of the counselling to be conducted for NEET-UG 2024 admissions till the investigation into the alleged paper leak is completed. They have further demanded the constitution of a Special Investigation Team (SIT) to investigate the matter.

On June 8, the NTA and the Union Education Ministry announced that a four-member committee will review the results of over 1,500 candidates who were awarded grace marks to compensate for the loss of time.
