Union Minister Shobha Karandlaje announced in Lok Sabha that employment in India has increased by around 17 crore over the past decade, reaching 64.33 crore in 2023-24.

New Delhi: Union Minister of State for Labour and Employment Shobha Karandlaje announced in the Lok Sabha that employment in India increased by around 17 crore over the past decade, as reported by news agency IANS. According to the latest data from the Reserve Bank of India (RBI), employment rose to 64.33 crore in 2023-24, up from 47.15 crore in 2014-15.

Karandlaje referred to the KLEMS (Capital, Labour, Energy, Materials, and Services) database, which provides nationwide employment estimates, to support her statement. She also highlighted that the Periodic Labour Force Survey (PLFS), conducted by the Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation (MoSPI) since 2017-18, serves as the official data source for employment and unemployment figures.

The data shows an increasing trend in the worker-population ratio (WPR) and a decreasing unemployment rate over the years. The National Career Service (NCS) portal (www.ncs.gov.in) offers job search, career counseling, vocational guidance, and information on skill development and internships. As of July 30, the NCS platform has over 30.92 lakh employees and more than 20 lakh active vacancies.
