Indian Universities Shine In QS World University Rankings 2025, IIT Bombay Leads, MIT Retains Top Spot Globally

QS World University Rankings 2025: The Indian Institute of Technology Bombay (IIT-B) has secured the top position in India.

QS World University Ranking 2025 has been released and 61 percent of Indian universities’ ranking has improved. The Indian Institute of Technology Bombay (IIT-B) has secured the top spot in India. IIT Bombay has climbed from 149 in 2024 to 118 in the 2025 rankings. Globally, the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) retained the ‘best institute in the world’ position for the 13th time this year.

"This year's ranking is the largest ever, featuring over 1,500 universities across 105 higher education systems. The United States is the most represented country or territory, with 197 ranked institutions, followed by the United Kingdom with 90 and mainland China with 71," reads the official notice.

As in previous years, IIT Bombay is followed by IIT Delhi and the Indian Institute of Science (IISc), Bengaluru, ranking second and third in India, respectively. IIT Delhi made a significant leap, climbing 47 places from 197 last year to 150 this year. IISc also improved, moving up 14 ranks from 225 to 211.

The Indian Institute of Technology Kharagpur (IIT-KGP) secured the fourth spot, rising from 271 in the 2024 rankings to 222 this year. Following IIT KGP is IIT Madras, which advanced 58 ranks from 285 to 227. IIT Madras has taken the position of IIT Kanpur, which, despite climbing from 278 to 263, has slipped to the sixth position.

The Ministry of Education congratulated the IITs for reaching new heights.

"Congratulations to @iitbombay and @iitdelhi for reaching new heights in the QS World University Rankings 2025! Having achieved their positions in the top 150 rankings, IIT Bombay is now ranked 118th, climbing 31 ranks and IIT Delhi at 150th, climbing 47 ranks globally. Applauding all the stakeholders responsible for their painstaking efforts in achieving this historic feat," the Ministry of Education said in a post on X.
