IIT Guwahati: Student Found Dead In Hostel; 4th Death This Year Sparks Protests Over Mental Health Support

A third-year Computer Science student at IIT Guwahati was found dead in his hostel room, marking the fourth student death at the institute this year. An investigation is ongoing.

Guwahati: A third-year Computer Science student from the Indian Institute of Technology Guwahati (IITG) was tragically found dead in his hostel room on Monday, police reported. The student, originally from Uttar Pradesh, was discovered in his room at the Brahmaputra Hostel. Authorities have sent the body for a post-mortem examination as the investigation is ongoing. This marks the fourth student death at IIT Guwahati this year. Just last month, on August 9, a female student was also found dead, allegedly by suicide, in her hostel room.

Students Protest Against Administration

Following the latest incident, a group of students gathered outside the administration building, demanding justice for the deceased and improved mental health support for the student community. According to one protester, the student had been suffering from ongoing physical health issues and mental distress, which severely affected his ability to focus on his studies. Despite submitting medical certificates to the administration, the students allege that his condition was not given due consideration, leading to a deterioration of his mental health, PTI reported.

What did IIT Guwahati say?

In response to the protests, the dean of students' welfare met with the agitated students, assuring them that the institution prioritizes the physical and mental well-being of all students.

“IITG is deeply saddened by the loss of one of our students. Our thoughts and condolences go out to the family and friends of the deceased during this difficult time,” an institute spokesperson stated. The spokesperson also emphasized that IITG is fully committed to supporting students through various resources and ensuring their well-being.

"We encourage students to make use of the support systems in place. IITG is dedicated to fostering a safe and supportive environment for everyone on campus," the spokesperson added.
