IIMC Granted Deemed University Status, Now Authorised To Confer Degrees: UGC

With its new status, the IIMC can now offer degree programmes at various levels including doctoral degrees.

The Indian Institute of Mass Communication (IIMC) has been granted the status of a ‘Deemed-To-Be University.’ A pioneering educational institute in the country in the field of Journalism and Mass Communication education and training, the IIMC receives its new grant status of a Deemed-To-Be University by the Union Ministry of Education, following UGC’s advice. The declaration of status extends to all campuses of the IIMC including its main campus in New Delhi as well as its five regional campuses located in Jammu (Jammu & Kashmir), Amravati (Maharashtra), Aizawl (Mizoram), Kottayam (Kerala), and Dhenkanal (Odisha).

With its upgraded status, the Indian Institute of Mass Communication will now be able to offer degrees including doctoral degrees. At the moment, the ace media education institute offers Diploma and Postgraduate Diploma programmes in various streams of Journalism like Print, Television, Public Relations, and some others.

Following the announcement, the IIMC expressed gratitude towards the Ministry of Education for awarding it with a University status. “A big thanks to the Ministry of Education for declaring IIMC New Delhi and its five regional centres as a Deemed to be University. IIMC is committed to giving its best to promote education, training, and research in mass communication,” the IIMC said through its official handle on X (formerly Twitter).

After the announcement, Union Minister of Youth Affairs and Sports, Anurag Thakur also welcomed the move, and hailed IIMC’s glorious history of imparting quality education in the field of Media. “It is a special and historic day for the Indian Institute of Mass Communication (IIMC) as it receives deemed University Status. This Institute has a glorious history of imparting quality education in media subjects like Journalism, Advertising, Public Relations,” Anurag Thakur said in a post on X.

 The granting of University status marks a new beginning, as more courses could be added to the curriculum along with research and doctoral programmes. I wholeheartedly thank Hon'ble PM Shri @narendramodi ji and Hon’ble Minister for Education Shri @dpradhanbjp ji for this decision. This step will provide our youth with new opportunities and help them explore new avenues.
