President Murmu Nominates Chandigarh University Founder-Chancellor Satnam Singh Sandhu To Rajya Sabha

A noted educationist who founded the Chandigarh Group of Colleges, Satnam Singh Sandhu has also been involved in community efforts through his two NGOs.

The founder-chancellor of Chandigarh University, Satnam Singh Sandhu has been nominated to the Rajya Sabha on January 30, 2024. In an official notification, the Ministry of Home Affairs said that President Droupadi Murmu has nominated Sandhu to the upper house of Parliament, news agency PTI reported. Sandhu, is one of India’s leading educationists and a son of a farmer, the notification further said. 

An agriculturalist who struggled to attain education, Sandhu, in 2001, laid the foundation of Chandigarh Group of Colleges (CGC) in Landran in Mohali, leading up to the establishment of Chandigarh University in 2012, it added. 

The notification further states that through his two NGOs -the Indian Minorities Foundation and the New India Development Foundation, Sandhu has also been involved in large-scale community efforts aimed at improving health and wellness, as well as communal harmony.

On Sandhu’s nomination to the Rajya Sabha, Vice President and Rajya Sabha chairman Jagdeep Dhankhar welcomed the educationist to the upper house of the parliament. 

“I welcome the nomination of Shri Satnam Singh Sandhu Ji to the Rajya Sabha. His rich work in community service and his passion towards education, innovation and learning will be big sources of strength for the Rajya Sabha. I wish him the very best for his tenure,” Vice President Dhankar said in a post on X (formerly Twitter).

 Prime Minister Modi also expressed delight on Sandhu’s nomination to the Rajya Sabha. “I am delighted that Rashtrapati Ji has nominated Shri Satnam Singh Sandhu Ji to the Rajya Sabha. Satnam Ji has distinguished himself as a noted educationist and social worker, who has been serving people at the grassroots in different ways,” PM Modi said on X.

 “He has always worked extensively to further national integration and has also worked with the Indian diaspora. I wish him the very best for his Parliamentary journey and am confident the Rajya Sabha proceedings will be enriched by his views,” the Prime Minister added.
