DUSU Elections 2023: Delhi University Students' Union Set To Get New Office-Holders After 3 Years As Varsity Goes To Polls Today

The polling will be held from 08:30 am to 01:00 pm today for day classes, and from 03:00 pm to 07:30 pm for evening classes.

The wait for over four years is finally over now and the Delhi University will see its students across its colleges voting to elect their student union representatives in the Delhi University Students’ Union Elections 2023 (DUSU 2023) today, September 2022. While college polling will be held through paper ballots, the polling for DUSU will be held through EVMs, as per DUSU Chief Electoral Officer Chandra Shekhar.

Polling for the Delhi University Elections 2023 will be held from 08:30 am to 01:00 pm for day classes, and from 03:00 pm to 07:30 pm for evening classes. Earlier yesterday, September 21, 2203, college campuses across the university witnessed extensive efforts by all contesting parties on the last day of campaigning.

"To ensure that DUSU votes are cast first, EVMs should be placed prior to paper ballot boxes. Polling timings are from 8.30 am to 1 pm for day classes and from 3 pm to 7.30 pm for evening classes," Shekhar was quoted as saying by news agency PTI.

In the Delhi University Elections this year, prominent student parties in DU like ABVP (Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad), AISA (All India Students Association), NSUI (National Students Union of India), and some others will be locking their horns contesting for four central seats which include President, Vice-President, Secretary, and Joint Secretary.

In the last DUSU Elections which was held in 2019, ABVP bagged three of the four posts, while one seat was grabbed by the NSUI. A total of 24 candidates will be contesting for the four seats, while students from 52 colleges of the Delhi University will be voting to elect the new DUSU office-bearers today.

To ensure the conduct of DU Elections 2023 in a flawless manner, the university administration also roped in executives to train designated staff from DU colleges. On September 18, DU VC Yogesh Singh also chaired a meeting to take stock of preparations, arrangements, and security measures for the DUSU elections.

In the build-up to the elections, tensions have also been reported among the two primary rivals in the DUSU 2023 Elections, the ABVP and the NSUI. A day before the elections, the NSUI accused the ABVP of ‘Brazen Violence’ on the campus, and said that the students of the university will teach them a ,esson in the elections for their hooliganism.

"The scenes seen in Delhi University are very concerning. It is a prestigious university where not only students from the country but all over the world come and study. On social media, videos of violence are going viral which is very concerning for parents," Congress leader and AICC’s NSUI in-charge Kanhaiya Kumar was quoted as saying by PTI.

“Continuously (the) ABVP is indulging brazenly in violence and 'gundagardi (hooliganism)'," Kumar alleged. The ABVP on the other hand, has been reportedly releasing videos on social media platforms, alleging the NSUI of violence and misconduct.

Considering the DUSU Elections and the ongoing rift between ABVP and NSUI in the background of the elections, the Delhi Police has also geared up with lighter feet. As per media reports, the Delhi police has seized over 30 vehicles in the past two days, with most of them being from Uttar Pradesh. Besides barricading at several places, the Delhi Police is also conducting thorough searches of every vehicle heading towards DU campuses.

While the DUSU elections were hit by the Covid-19 pandemic in 2020 and 2021, as was the case with student union elections across other universities in the country, in 2022, the DUSU election turned out to be a victim of the disruptions in the academic calendar.

After four years, with fresh students across different colleges, especially with the new 2023 batch, and classes and campus activities back to normalcy, the DUSU Elections 2023 has been seen in its full fervor this year. Following the conduct of the DUSU 2023 Elections today, the counting is expected to be done tomorrow, September 2023, with the results likely to be announced by mid afternoon tomorrow.
