Delhi Monsoon Fury: MCD Declares Holiday Till July 16 For Schools Under Its Administration

Owing to the flood-like situations in the national capital and rising water levels in Yamuna, the MCD has directed all schools under its administration to remain closed till July 16.

In the wake of incessant rains leading to rising water levels in the Yamuna River and a flood-like situation in the national capital, the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) has directed all schools under its administration to be closed till July 16. The education department of the Municipal Corporation of Delhi directed the closure of its schools through an official order released today, July 13, 2023. “In accordance with the directions issued by the Delhi Disaster Management Authority on account of the rising waters of the river Yamuna, it is hereby directed that all MCD, MCD aided & Recognized by MCD shall remain closed up to 16.07.2023 (Sunday) for all purposes. All Hos/Incharges of above said Schools are further directed to disseminate this information among all students and Staff,” reads the official MCD order.

Notably, owing to the heavy rainfall in Delhi and surroundinga reas of the NCR (National Capital Region), there has been flood-like situation in the national capital with the Yamuna river crossing the danger mark. With water logging in several areas of the city and Yamuna waters even entering low-lying areas across Delhi, the everyday lives of people in the national capital has been severely affected.

Following the current situation, earlier today, the Directorate of Education (DTE), Govt of Delhi, also released safety advisory for schools across Delhi. Besides asking schools in the East, North East, North, South East & Central districts of Delhi to take adequate safety measures, the advisory also directed schools in low-lying areas of the city to be closed immediately with no further notice. 

In a similar move, the Gautam Buddha Nagar district administration directed all schools in Noida to be closed tomorrow, July 14, 2023. "Owing to the increased water levels in the Yamuna River due to incessant rains, and the probability of further rains, the district officer hereby directs all schools till Class 12 to be closed tomorrow, July 14," reads the circular form the district school examiner's office, Gautam Buddha Nagar district.
