Cold Wave: MCD, Punjab Schools Till Class 10 To Remain Closed From January 8 To 14

While Punjab schools will be observing another winter break from January 8 to 14 for classes up to 10, MCD schools will also remain closed for the same period due to the intense cold.

The schools run by the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) in the national capital will remain closed from January 8 to 12, 2024. The move from the MCD comes amid the prevailing cold weather conditions sweeping across parts of North India. Delhi Mayor Shelly Oberoi announced the closure of MCD Schools through an official post on X (formerly Twitter) today.

“In view of the prevailing weather condition, all MCD, MCD-Aided and MCD-Recognized schools shall remain closed for the next five days i.e. from 08.01.2024 to 12.01.2024. 13th and 14th January being Second Saturday and Sunday respectively, the school will be reopened on 15.01.2024 (Monday),” the Delhi Mayor said on X.

Earlier today, Delhi Education Minister also announced that Delhi Schools for classes Nursery to 5 shall remain closed from January 8 to 12, 2024. The Delhi minister further said that while schools shall operate for classes 6 and upwards, schools have been clearly instructed to not operate before 08:00 am, and after 05:00 pm. On Saturday, the Gautam Buddh Nagar District Basic Education Officer Rahul Panwar also issued a notice to all schools in Noida and Greater Noida to remain shut till January 14.

In a similar move, the Bhagwant Mann led Punjab government has also announced another winter break for up to class 10 in all schools in the state starting from January 8 to January 14. While Punjab schools earlier observed a winter break from December 14 to 31, 2023, the severe cold wave and fog have pushed the state government to call for another winter break. The fresh winter break in Punjab schools was announced by CM Bhagwant Mann on X (formerly Twitter) today.

“In view of the extreme cold, it has been decided to declare holidays from January 8 to January 14 in all government and private schools up to class 10th in Punjab,” reads the post from Punjab CM on X.
