Assam TET Exam Cancelled For Next Two Years, Education Minister Ranoj Pegu Says

Assam government cancels Assam TET Exam for Lower Primary and Upper Primary for two years, open positions to be filled by CTET- qualified candidates.

Addressing a press conference on Wednesday, January 11, 2023, Assam Education Minister Ranoj Pegu announced that the Assam government has cancelled the Assam TET Exam for the next two years. The minister added that the decision to halt the Assam TET Exam was taken considering the fact that there are a sufficient number of TET- qualified candidates in the state.

“Assam TET exam will not be held for lower primary (LP) or upper primary (UP) for the next two years. The vacancies can be filled by the candidates who have already cleared the TET exam,” the education minister said.

Pegu further said that the state government will now accept Central Teachers Eligibility Test (CTET) scores for the recruitment of government school teachers. Candidates who have qualified the Assam DEIEd Exam can now appear in the CTET Exam instead of Assam TET, he added.

“CTET qualified candidates will now be allowed to apply for jobs beginning this year,” Pegu said. Candidates who have already passed the CTET will be able to apply for open positions,” Pegu said.

Soon after the announcement, various student groups from the state have reportedly requested the government to reconsider the decision, since a lot of students have already been preparing for the Assam TET Exam.

Notably, the state education minister recently informed the state assembly that around 2900 schools in the state are currently run by a single teacher. He further added that around 15, 161 educational institutions in the state are run by two teachers and 8,207 by three teachers. All the educational institutions in question here are primary schools, with no secondary-level educational institute in the list, Ranoj Pegu was quoted saying by PTI.
