Notably, Kumble retired from all forms of cricket before the 2011 IPL auctions. Soon after, he was appointed as a mentor for the Bangalore franchise. His guidance led Bangalore to the runners-up position in the 2011 IPL. In 2013, Kumble stepped down as the mentor for Bangalore and assumed the same role for the Mumbai franchise.
In October 2012, Kumble assumed the role of ICC Cricket Committee Chairman. In June 2016, following the recommendation of BCCI's advisory committee, Kumble became the head coach of India's cricket team. He held the position successfully for a year, except for India's loss in the 2017 Champions Trophy final. Allegedly due to a fallout with captain Virat Kohli, Kumble was replaced by Ravi Shastri. Despite this, he still heads ICC's technical committee and remains an influential mentor at the NCA for young cricketers.
