Delhi: 12 Injured, 3 Cases Registered After Crowd Clashes With Police During Muharram Processions

As the unruly crowd did not pay heed to police warning, the personnel had to resort to lathi-charge to disperse the mob, the FIR stated.

New Delhi: Three cases were registered after an unruly crowd in Muharram processions clashed with police and pelted stones, injuring twelve people in West Delhi's Nangloi, news agency PTI reported.

The first FIR was registered under Sections of Indian Penal Code (IPC) and Prevention of Damage to Public Property Act at Nangloi police station on the complaint of Nangloi SHO Prabhu Dayal for an incident at Surajmal Stadium. The second case was registered on the complaint lodged by Nanag Ram, the law and order inspector at Nangloi police station, for an incident at Nangloi Chowk. The third FIR was registered on the complaint of Mukesh Kumar, head constable, for an incident near the Nangloi metro station.

Twelve people, including six police personnel suffered minor injuries in the clashes, PTI reported.

According to Nangloi SHO Prabhu Dayal, several processions were scheduled in Nangloi and as per plan, they were supposed to proceed towards Surajmal Stadium via the metro station, take a u-turn from Nangloi depot red light and return to their designated place.

From 12 pm, various processions were approaching from different places as per the predetermined route, the FIR said. “Around 5 pm, some processions from the Prem Nagar and Aman Vihar areas of Rohini district crossed the Kirari Gate and reached the front of Surajmal Stadium via Rohtak Road. Upon reaching the site, instead of following the pre-decided route, some people tried to enter the stadium and started pushing and shoving,” it added.

Since they did not have the permission to enter the stadium, they were stopped. The Nangloi SHO and other officers tried to pacify the crowd but they started fighting, the FIR added.

"On our refusal, the organisers and their supporters started pelting stones at the police. One of them, having a knife in his hand, attacked sub-inspector Parveen, on which Parveen grabbed the knife in order to save himself and received injury," the FIR stated.

As the unruly crowd did not pay heed to police warning, the personnel had to resort to lathi-charge to disperse the mob, the FIR added.
