Delhi MCD Election: Former Congress MP Mahabal Mishra Joins AAP Amid Kejriwal's Poll Pitch

Adressing the rally in Paharganj, Delhi CM Kejriwal stated: "Don't vote for those who want to stop development & welfare work in Delhi," PTI reported.

Ahead of the upcoming MCD elections, Former MP and Congress leader Mahabal Mishra on Sunday joined the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) in presence of the AAP National convenor & Delhi CM Arvind Kejriwal & Deputy CM Manish Sisodia during a public rally, news agency ANI reported.

Adressing the rally in Paharganj, Delhi CM Kejriwal stated: "Don't vote for those who want to stop development & welfare work in Delhi," PTI reported.

Slamming BJP, Kejriwal said: "BJP has hatched a conspiracy to stop free supply of power to Delhiites; I will not let them succeed."

"You gave me 67 out of 70 seats in assembly polls. I don't want anything less than that," he further said.

Who Is Mahabal Mishra?

Mishra, who was born in Bihar on July 31, 1953, completed his Intermediate (10+2, Science) and obtained a diploma in transistor theory from L S College in Muzaffarpur.

Mahabal Mishra began his political career in 1997 as a councillor for the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) in West Delhi's Dabri ward. He was later elected to the Lok Sabha once and to the Delhi Legislative Assembly three times.

He initially won a seat in the Delhi Assembly in the Nasirpur district during the 1998 election. He gained re-election from the same seat in 2003 and the 2008 Assembly election from the Dwarka seat. He ran for the Lok Sabha in 2009 under the banner of the Congress Party from the West Delhi seat, where he defeated Jagdish Mukhi of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) by 129,010 votes.

MCD Polls 2022

According to the polling schedule released by the state electoral board last week, elections for the MCD will be place on December 4 and the results will be tallied on December 7.

MCD is an essential part of municipal administration and affects people on a daily basis, hence the contest involves high stakes for both the AAP and the BJP. Nearly 80% of Delhi is administered by the municipal authority, which offers almost as many services as the city government.

It will be the AAP's second attempt at a civic election. The AAP was unable to defeat the BJP at MCD despite sweeping to historic victory in the 2015 and 2020 assembly elections.

The elections will be crucial for the BJP, which has controlled the MCD for three straight terms, to keep control of the local political scene after suffering two consecutive losses at the assembly elections.
