Chennai doctor attack: A 25-year-old man attacked and stabbed Dr Balaji, an oncologist on duty at Chennai's Kalaignar Centenary Hospital, multiple times on Wednesday. The doctor, who sustained severe injuries, was admitted to the hospital’s intensive care unit (ICU), where he remains in critical condition.
The assailant, identified as a family member of a patient, reportedly launched the attack on Dr Balaji while he was attending to patients. Security personnel detained four people in connection with the incident as authorities work to clarify the motives behind the assault.
According to preliminary inquiries, the suspect's mother, Prema, underwent cancer treatment in the Oncology department of Kalaignar Multi-speciality Hospital from May to November this year. After she experienced complications, the suspect, accompanied by three friends, went to the hospital on Wednesday to retaliate against the doctor, whom they blamed for alleged negligence.
Expressing strong condemnation, Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK Stalin described the attack as an "atrocity." He confirmed that those involved had been promptly apprehended and assured that Dr Balaji would receive comprehensive medical care.
“Doctor Balaji, working at Guindy Kalaignar Centenary Hospital, was stabbed by a family member of the patient. The person involved in this atrocity was immediately arrested. I have ordered to give Balaji all the necessary treatment and to conduct a detailed inquiry into the incident,” Stalin stated, as per the tweet.
