The jam was caused by a protest against the detention of Bajrang Dal leader Vikas Verma. Following the incident, police are now using video footage to identify the culprits.

The incident took place last week when a teenage girl, who was reported missing from Budaun, was seen outside the Dehradun Railway station with a man from a different community. A clash broke out between people of the two communities over the duo's 'friendship'. The situation escalated and the police intervened. But both sides attacked the police and hurled stones at them. The police had to resort to lathi charge to bring the situation under control late at night.
