West Bengal: TMC Councillor Among Three Held In Connection With Explosion In Titagarh

The incident occurred in the congested Ward 4 of Titagrah Municipality, Kolkata, West Bengal which triggered panic in the area.

Three persons, including a TMC councillor, were apprehended in connection with the blast that took place at the BT Road in Titagarh near Kolkata, West Bengal. During the explosion, a portion of the walls of an apartment were blown off, police said.

The incident occurred in the congested Ward 4 of Titagrah Municipality, which triggered panic in the area, a police officer said, news agency PTI reported.

Titagarh Municipality Councillor Arman Mandal and two others have been taken into custody. Preliminary investigation suggests that the flat was rented by Mandal, he added.

"There was nobody inside the flat when the explosion took place. We suspect there were explosives kept inside the apartment. Investigation is underway," he said.

A nearby shanty was also damaged when chunks of concrete from the blast-hit apartment fell onto it, the officer noted.

No Injuries Reported

According to Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP) IB Jha, "This morning at around 7 am, Titagarh PS received information about an incident of an explosion. The Police team reached the spot, cordoned off the area and called the FSL team. If no complaint regarding the incident is received, we will file a suo motu case. We have no information about injury to any person. The flat in which this incident occurred was vacant. We are investigating whose possession this flat was under."

Initial reports indicate that while no injuries have been reported, the blast caused significant damage to the structure, with the walls of the affected flat blown off.

A police officer on the scene stated, "There was nobody inside the flat when the blast took place. Though nobody was injured, the walls of the flat were blown off as a result of the blast. It seems that the blast happened due to some explosives kept inside the flat. We have started an investigation."

The impact of the explosion extended beyond the flat, with concrete debris damaging a nearby shanty, further escalating concerns in the densely populated area.
