Pune News: Man Arrested For Theft Dies In Police Custody For This Reason, CID Begins Probe
Pune News: The man was arrested with another accused on August 7 for theft of gold ornaments and lodged in in general lock-ups at Vishrambaug police station.
Pune News: A man arrested by Pune police in a case of theft died on Saturday after developing seizure-like symptoms and undergoing surgery for a suspected cerebral haemorrhage. The state Criminal Investigation Department (CID) has initiated a probe into the matter, as required by protocol for deaths in custody.
The 47-year-old man has been identified by police as Sachin Ashok Gaikwad, a resident of Mundhwa, reported the Indian Express.
In March, Gaikwad and another suspect Manohar Ramesh Mane (36) were booked in a case of theft of a gold ornament registered at Parvati police station and Gaikwad was lodged in general lock-up by Pune City police at Vishrambag police station.
They were arrested at 9 pm on August 7 and were placed in general lock-ups at Vishrambaug police station, said Deputy Commissioner of Police (Zone 3) Sambhaji Kadam.
On August 8, the accused were presented before the court, and police custody was granted until August 10, he added.
However, on August 9, Gaikwad suddenly developed seizure-like symptoms at 6 am in Vishrambaug general lock-up. He was immediately rushed to Sassoon Hospital in an ambulance where he was admitted to the Intensive Care Unit where the treatment began, as per the report.

Due to a cerebral haemorrhage, he underwent surgery at 12.30 pm on the same day, said DCP Kadam. Gaikwad had a medical history and his family was aware of it, the report stated.
He passed away at 6:30 pm on August 10 while undergoing treatment at Sassoon Hospital. The case has been handed over to the Crinimal Investigation Department as per the procedure and further enquiry is underway, the Depty Commissioner of Police said.
