PM Modi Goes On Lion Safari At Gir National Park In Gujarat On World Wildlife Day: See Pics

On World Wildlife Day, PM Modi also shared a video on X, reiterating government's dedication towards the protection of the country's rich biodiversity.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday went on a lion safari at Gir National Park and Wildlife Sanctuary in Gujarat's Junagadh district on the occasion of the World Wildlife Day.

PM Modi, who is on a three-day tour of the state, made a night halt at Sinh Sadan, a forest house managed by the Gujarat forest department in Sasan, known for being the last abode of the Asiatic lion. 

In a post on X, PM Modi on Monday, highlighted government's dedication towards the protection of the country's rich biodiversity. "Today, on #WorldWildlifeDay, let’s reiterate our commitment to protect and preserve the incredible biodiversity of our planet. Every species plays a vital role—let’s safeguard their future for generations to come!" he said.

"We also take pride in India’s contributions towards preserving and protecting wildlife," he wrote on X, along with a video. 

PM Modi To Chair NBWL Meeting At Sasan Gir

Prior to this, PM Modi had visited Somnath, where he offered prayers at the Lord Shiv temple, on Sunday evening. From Sinh Sadan, the PM departed on the lion safari, accompanied by a few ministers and senior forest department officials. PM will also chair the seventh meeting of the National Board for Wildlife at Sasan Gir, the headquarters of the Gir Wildlife Sanctuary.

The NBWL comprises of 47 members, including the Chief of Army Staff, chief wildlife wardens and secretaries from various states, and representatives from NGOs working in this field.

After the meeting, PM Modi is also expected to interact with some women forest staffers at Sasan.

The Centre has approved over Rs 2,900 crore for Project Lion, aimed at the conservation of Asiatic lions, a government release stated. "Currently, the Asiatic lions inhabit nearly 30,000 square kilometres across 53 talukas in 9 districts of Gujarat," it said.

On Sunday, PM Modi also visited Vantara, an animal rescue, conservation and rehabilitation centre situated in the Reliance Jamnagar refinery complex. Vantara is dedicated to the welfare of captive elephants and wildlife, and also provides medical care to animals rescued from abuse. 

PM Modi had decided to proclaim March 3 as World Wildlife Day to celebrate and raise awareness about the world's wild fauna and flora. He announced the decision on December 20, 2013 at the 68th session of the United Nations General Assembly.
