As the sacred month of Shravan begins, preparations are in full swing for the annual Kanwar Yatra — a spiritual journey that draws millions of devotees to Haridwar, where they collect holy Ganga water to offer at Shiva temples in their hometowns. This year, the pilgrimage is scheduled to run from 11 July to 23 July.
To ensure the safety and smooth conduct of this massive event, authorities in Uttar Pradesh have implemented an elaborate security and logistical plan. The district has been divided into 18 zones and 88 sectors to manage the influx of pilgrims, according to Senior Superintendent of Police Sanjay Kumar. In addition, over 1,500 CCTV cameras have been installed along the yatra routes for continuous surveillance.
In a bid to enhance accountability and safety, Kanwar camp organisers have been instructed to install CCTV systems at their respective sites. All workers serving at these camps are also required to carry valid identity cards.
To facilitate pilgrim movement, the Uttar Pradesh Roadways will operate 60 special buses throughout the yatra period. Meanwhile, the state health department is setting up 43 medical camps across the Muzaffarnagar district. These camps will be equipped with essential medicines and staff ready to respond to any medical emergencies.
Chief Medical Officer Dr Sunil Teotia confirmed that around 100 beds have been reserved at district hospitals and community health centres for pilgrims who fall ill or suffer injuries during the yatra.
Adding another layer of precaution, Deputy Inspector General of Police Abhishek announced the deployment of police divers at major bathing spots along the Ganga, Yamuna, and Ganga canal in Saharanpur, Muzaffarnagar, and Shamli districts.
