Civic Volunteer Sanjay Roy Convicted Of RG Kar Doctor's Rape & Murder In Kolkata
A special court in Kolkata has given its verdict in the rape and murder case of a trainee doctor at state-run RG Kar Medical College and Hospital.

A special court in Kolkata on Saturday convicted Sanjay Roy in the RG Kar rape and murder case. A civic volunteer, Sanjay Roy was named the "sole prime accused" in the rape and murder of a trainee doctor at the state-run RG Kar Medical College and Hospital on August 9 last year. The case sparked nationwide outrage and prolonged protests by doctors and other health workers.
The judgment was delivered by Anirban Das, the additional district and sessions judge of the Sealdah court and the sentence for Roy will be declared on Monday. The additional districts and sessions judge of Sealdah court concluded the trial in the case on January 9 after 57 days of hearing.
The court found Roy guilty of rape and murder governed under sections 64, 66 and 103 (1) of Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita. The accused pleaded guilty saying he has "falsely implicated." "Those who have done so are being let go," he claimed, adding one IPS is also "involved" in the case.
Roy was arrested by Kolkata police a day after the victim's body was found in a seminar hall of RG Kar premises in the morning of August 2024.

The case was handed over to the Central Bureau of Investigation which arrested two more people, the former and controversial principal of RG Kar College, Sandip Ghosh and former Station House Officer of Tala Police Station Abhijit Mondal.
Both were arrested on charges of tampering and altering the evidence but were later granted "default bail" by the same special court since the probe agency failed to file a supplementary chargesheet against them within 90 days from the day of arrest.
The charges were framed against Roy at the special court till November 4, and henceforth the trial began on November 11.
The entire trial process was recorded and held within the closed courtroom. The statements of a total of 50 witnesses were recorded including the victim's parents, investigating officials of both CBI and Kolkata Police, forensic experts and some doctors and colleagues of the victim at R.G. Kar.
