A postgraduate trainee doctor was raped and murdered at the RG Kar Medical College and Hospital in Kolkata while on duty last week. The body of the 32-year-old woman was found on August 9 morning in the seminar hall of the government-run hospital in the West Bengal capital. This incident has triggered a nationwide protest by doctors and medical fraternities.
As the investigation and protests following the rape and murder of a trainee doctor in RG Kar Medical College in Kolkata continue, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) is set to begin its protests today. The saffron party will stage protest near police station in Kolkata's Shyam Bazar.
Former Indian cricketer Sourav Ganguly will also hit the streets today to protest against the death of the trainee doctor. He will be accompanied by his wife, Dona Ganguly.
The mother-in-law of accused Sanjay has claimed involvement of more people in the crime. She said that Sanjay could not have done it alone. While speaking to news agency ANI about her daughter's experience with Roy on Monday, she said that Roy thrashed her daughter, against which a police complaint was filed.
SC Grills Bengal Govt Over Handling Of RG Kar Rape-Murder Case
The Supreme Court on Tuesday heard the suo motu case over the rape and murder of a doctor at the RG Kar Medical College Hospital, Kolkata. The apex court grilled the West Bengal government over its handling of the case and asked why the FIR was registered at 11:45 PM when the crime was detected early in the morning.
The CJI DY Chandrachud led bench said that the case has shocked the conscience of the nation and expressed concern over the victim's pictures and names being circulated on social media.
"We took suo motu action because this is not just the matter of a particular horrific murder and rape...but it raises systemic issue of safety of doctors across India," CJI said. The apex court while hearing the case posed several questions to Senior Advocate Kapil Sibal appearing for the West Bengal Government.
"Crime is detected early in morning, the principal tries to pass this off as suicide and untill night there was no FIR? What was the principal doing? Why no FIR till late in the night? A matter of serious concern !" The CJI said.
