'What Can Be Done If Friend Rapes His Friend?': TMC's Kalyan Banerjee On Kolkata Law Student Assault Case

A 24-year-old law college student in Kolkata was gang-raped inside the educational institution in the city. Three accused, including an alumnus, have been arrested and sent on police remand.

Trinamool Congress MP Kalyan Banerjee on Friday reacted to the gang-rape case of a 24-year-old law college student in Kolkata, West Bengal, questioning, "What can be done if a friend rapes his friend?"

Banerjee further asked what precautions should one take in cases where a student commits a crime against another student, asking, “Will the police be there in schools?" He also urged women to be cautious of those with “dirty mindsets.”

“I am not an advocate into the incident that occurred at the Law College but the accused should be arrested. A few men commit this type of crime...But what can be done if a friend rapes his friend. Will the Police be there in schools? This was done by students to another student. Who will protect her (victim)?” the TMC MP told news agency ANI on Friday.

Banerjee's reaction came after the law student filed a complaint that she was allegedly gang-raped by three men inside the educational institution. Three men, including an alumnus and two senior students, have been arrested in connection with the case.

The Serampore Lok Sabha MP also said that those who are roaming around with "such people should understand whom they are accompanying."

On being asked how an incident like this happened just months after the RG Kar rape and murder case in Kolkata, Banerjee said that this cannot be stopped any law or police, until and unless the mindset of people is changed.

The arrested accused were produced before a court and have been remanded to police custody for four days.

As per a report by news agency PTI, the key accused is a former student of the institute and a practising criminal lawyer at the Alipore Police and Sessions Court.

In her complaint, the survivor narrated chilling details of the incident and alleged that she was being pressured for marriage by prime accused Manojit Mishra. When she refused, citing an exisiting relationship, she was sexually assaulted. She has even alleged that they filmed the act and threatened to kill her and her boyfriend.

The two other accused have been identified as 19-year-old  first-year student Zaib Ahmed, and 20-year-old Pramit Mukherjee, who is also a current student.
