The South Calcutta Law College has been shut for an indefinite period amid a gangrape probe. The SIT sealed key locations within the college while a BJP four-member fact-finding team criticised Mamata Banerjee-led govt.

The South Calcutta Law College has been shut for an indefinite period following the alleged gang rape of a first-year law student, with college authorities announcing a suspension of all BA LLB and LLM classes, according to a notification issued on Monday. The decision, taken by the college’s governing body, comes as a Special Investigation Team (SIT) continues its probe into the incident that has rocked Kolkata.

Kolkata Law Student Gangrape: Crime Scene Sealed, DNA Samples Collected

As part of the investigation, the SIT sealed key locations within the college, including the union room, guard’s room, a washroom, and one of the gates. A senior Kolkata Police officer told news agency PTI, “These rooms were the place where she was tortured by the three accused.” Police have arrested four individuals in connection with the case: prime accused Monojit Mishra, two current students Pratim Mukherjee and Zaid Ahmed, and the college’s security guard.

DNA samples from the three accused were collected at the Calcutta Medical College and Hospital on Monday, with body fluids, urine, and hair samples sent for forensic examination, the officer added. Investigators suspect the assault was premeditated and revealed that Mishra, Mukherjee, and Ahmed had a history of harassing female students on campus. Additionally, police have sent seized items from the crime scene and a 1.5-minute video clip of the torture—recovered from Mishra’s phone—for forensic testing.

Kolkata Law Student Gangrape: BJP’s Fact-Finding Team Attacks Mamata Govt

A four-member fact-finding team from the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP)—comprising leaders Satya Pal Singh, Meenakashi Lekhi, Biplab Kumar Deb, and Agnimitra Paul—visited Kolkata on Monday and addressed the media on the case. BJP leader Meenakashi Lekhi accused the ruling Trinamool Congress (TMC) of shielding criminals, stating, “... As a woman and an Indian citizen, I stand with all women who have been victims of such crimes. Politics has been criminalised and criminals are given protection by the ruling party. Now, with political protection, criminals are being appointed to colleges. Making use of that access and privilege, they indulge in such activities and our daughters are being misbehaved with. The whole political system has broken down and the civilians are paying the price for it…”

Satya Pal Singh echoed these concerns, telling news agency ANI, “I have been coming to West Bengal for the last many years. Women are unsafe, the common man is unsafe, goons are given protection, and governance has failed. We have asked the Police Commissioner as well, that at least complaints made by women should be registered and an investigation must be carried out…”

Biplab Kumar Deb also took aim at Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, asking, “Mamata Banerjee should feel ashamed as a woman and as a CM that another party’s delegation had come to look into the case. She could have done it herself, but she didn’t… Can she face the fact that she is not being able to give protection to women? A criminal was appointed to a law college. Before appointing anyone for a job, a criminal verification is carried out. Why was he given this job despite his background?”

BJP MLA Agnimitra Paul alleged that Mamata herself had previously made offensive remarks about women, adding, “Mamata Banerjee should send a show cause notice to Anubrata Mondal and arrest him. Before this, Kalyan Banerjee had also insulted women. Mamata Banerjee has also made remarks against women…”

Victim's Advocate Praises Kolkata Police, Rejects Need for CBI Probe

Meanwhile, Arindam Kanjilal, the victim’s advocate, confirmed to ANI that charges under gangrape provisions have been applied, carrying a minimum punishment of 20 years’ imprisonment and extending up to life imprisonment. Kanjilal praised the quick action taken by the Kolkata Police, saying, “I don’t think there is a need to bring CBI… Kolkata police is more than sufficient to tackle anything.”

He also noted that he was unaware of any prior unethical behaviour by the accused on campus, calling the incident “very unfortunate.”

Kolkata Law Student Gangrape: Police Assure Swift Justice

The Kolkata Police, in a statement on X (formerly Twitter), said, “Kasba Law College case update: All the three FIR-named accused persons have been arrested in less than 12 hours. Another accused person has since been arrested based on evidences. Medicolegal examination of the victim and the accused persons have been completed. Forensic examination of the place of occurrence has been done. Investigation is being monitored by a special investigation team under the close supervision of senior officers. Kolkata Police is committed to ensure that the perpetrators of the crime face the harshest possible legal action and the victim gets justice at the earliest.”

The incident, which occurred on June 25 inside the college premises in Kolkata’s Kasba area, has sparked widespread outrage and intensified scrutiny of the safety of women in West Bengal, especially following a recent similar incident at RG Kar Medical College.
