What Is Operation Blue Star?
On June 5, 1984, a military operation codenamed 'Operation Blue Star' was launched by the Indian Army to remove Sikh militants from Amritsar's Golden Temple.
Led by Jarnail Singh Bhindranwale, the militants were spearheading an armed movement for a separate Sikh state, called Khalistan, meaning the land of the pure.
Who Is Jarnail Singh Bhindranwale?
Jarnail Singh Bhindranwale was a Sikh religious scholar who advocated a return to the Khalsa and supported the Anandpur Sahib resolution. Through the resolution, the Sikhs demanded an autonomous region in the north of India, Khalistan.
He travelled across Punjab propagating his message and after gaining significant support, laid siege to the Golden Temple. Following this, then Prime Minister Indira Gandhi ordered Operation Blue Star in which 83 Indian Army soldiers died and nearly 150 militants, including Bhindranwale, were neutralised.
