'Khalistan Zindabad' Slogan Raised At Golden Temple On Op Blue Star Anniversary: VIDEO

Pro-Khalistan slogans were raised at Amritsar's Golden Temple on the 41st anniversary of Operation Blue Star.

Slogans of 'Khalistan Zindabad' were raised at Amritsar's Golden Temple on Friday as SAD (Mann faction) leader Simranjit Singh Mann reached the Sikh holy site on the  41st anniversary of Operation Blue Star.

Akal Takht's former Jathedar, Jasbir Singh Rode said the slogans "have always been raised here and across the world. There is nothing new in this."

Security has been beefed up across Amritsar city on the 41st anniversary of Operation Blue Star and the death anniversary of Jarnail Singh Bhindranwale.

The police have set up checkpoints to maintain law and order in the city.

Speaking to reporters, Rode further said that to this day the Indian government has not answered thy such a holy place of Sikh was attacked.

"Sikhs were demanding their rights. They had not announced an attack against the Indian government. Then, without any notice or warning, we were attacked as enemy countries are attacked," he said.

"People are celebrating today across the seven seas. People have come here across the country to pay their respect to those who laid down their lives for the sake of our religion for us," the former Jathedar added.

What Is Operation Blue Star?

On June 5, 1984, a military operation codenamed 'Operation Blue Star' was launched by the Indian Army to remove Sikh militants from Amritsar's Golden Temple.

Led by Jarnail Singh Bhindranwale, the militants were spearheading an armed movement for a separate Sikh state, called Khalistan, meaning the land of the pure.

Who Is Jarnail Singh Bhindranwale?

Jarnail Singh Bhindranwale was a Sikh religious scholar who advocated a return to the Khalsa and supported the Anandpur Sahib resolution. Through the resolution, the Sikhs demanded an autonomous region in the north of India, Khalistan.

He travelled across Punjab propagating his message and after gaining significant support, laid siege to the Golden Temple. Following this, then Prime Minister Indira Gandhi ordered Operation Blue Star in which 83 Indian Army soldiers died and nearly 150 militants, including Bhindranwale, were neutralised.
